The album was "officially released" (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/waxpancake/kind-of-bloop-an-8-bit-tribute-to-miles-davis/posts) on August 17. This means that, for anyone who gave $5 or more, a digital copy of the album was put on the website for them to download. Note that the lower money total means that this was available for people besides those who received the physical album.

The physical albums were shipped (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/waxpancake/kind-of-bloop-an-8-bit-tribute-to-miles-davis/posts/1261) on September 8.

Which of these should we use?

Well, I think we can mention all the releases in the notes, but since the entry is for the physical release, we should go with September 8.

The August 1 release sounds to me too much like a private affair, where the authors were rewarding their past supporters in a tangible way. This probably happens with other officials too (samples released early to reviewers, etc.)

Ah, I didn't make that as clear as I could have. That August 1 date is the date you had to pay money by in order to receive a physical copy of the album. Nothing was actually shipped until September 8, so it was more like a preorder deadline than anything else.

Oh, so no one can get the album who didn't pay by August 1. That's a tricky one. I'd probably still go with September 8 as the "release" date.
