I guess Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms were plagerists when they wrote their ninth and first symphonies, respectively, too...

Try "Alive" by Blue and "Dust to Dust" from Final Fantasy XIII. It's almost as if Square cut and pasted the harmony from Blue's song into their game.

Then there's this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9k7DrIWcrdI

In which Konami opted to remove the MGS theme from MGS4. Yeah, way too similar. Sorry TAPPY, but you're busted. Melodies and chord progressions are WAY too similar to be coincidence.

Also for the handful of people familiar with the music of Timesplitters 2, the level "Notre Dame" uses excerpts from Mozart's "Requiem" as well as Bach's "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor". I doubt these were plagiarisms though and rather homages to the originals.

Yep, that's undeniable. The ostinato is directly transposed (although it may have been subconscious). Mitsuda added his own countermelody and the section in 5/8 though.

The beginning anyway :| I don't necessarily think it's a coincidence the track by SONANAUT is called "The Twins" either.

Going backwards in time...

Final Fantasy VI (1994) - Overture

King's Quest V (1990) - Weeping Willow

Les Miserables Musical (1980) - Castle on a Cloud

It's amusing though, because even that resembles something from even further back.

Bach Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor (18th c.) - Polonaise

The King's Quest certainly borrows from Schoenberg, and Schoenberg certainly borrows from Bach... but the Overture seems a bit more tenuous, although it certainly borrows from the classics in general. I think the similarity here is more of a coincidence of writing in that style. I could be wrong though, Uematsu could be an avid showtune fan.

There's a slight homage/straightripoff on Naoshi Mizuta's Final Fantasy Legends (Dimensions on US). Track 40, IMPERATOR at 0:42.

Does it sound oddly familiar? Of course it should, because it's from Gran Turismo's awesome opening theme, Moon over the Castle.

This is pretty known, but still cool to share. Either this is a common Japanese music trope, or people just like taking riffs from SMB2 xD

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Fantasy Zone

Twinbee: Rainbow Bell Adventures

Sonic 3D Blast

It's more like it's just a very standard progression and stylistic mix, as it were.

It's a very common bridge chord progression, going all the way back to tin pan alley and ragtime (which is probably where Kondo got the idea) before that. Not really worth drawing attention to.

This part from the original Silent Hill theme always reminded me of the original James Bond theme, or at least some variation of it (I'm pretty sure there's an even closer-sounding variation, but I can't remember where I've heard it).

Also,

Funny, this reminded me of: Cargo Ship (Interior) from Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition (Genesis)

EDIT:

I wonder if they're maybe traditional Japanese melodies or something..

It still bothers me that Eric Serra's single Bond score isn't very well liked--not even by the producers. It's so the polar opposite of the typical action score which is what they were probably looking for with 90s Bond. Mitsuda and/or Takahashi have good taste.

Don't think so, considering that Osaki's name does not appear in the game credits (since he already left Falcom in 2010). The saddest thing is that I'm sure he composed many of the stand-out tracks from Ys Seven. :v

More Falcom stuff.

- Osaki left Falcom shortly after Zero no Kiseki (2010) got released.
- Nayuta no Kiseki was released in 2012.
- Staff rolls credits "Hayato Sonoda, Takahiro Unisuga, Saki Momiyama" for "Music and Sounds".
- It's been confirmed that Falcom used previously unused music composed by more recently departed Sound Team jdk members (Osaki and Takeshita) for Nayuta no Kiseki, via a .txt file in the game's files. Both went uncredited 'cause they no longer work at Falcom.

So... I don't think anyone asked Osaki for something like that, since it looks like he wasn't directly involved with the game. Feels more as if they needed a BGM of that kind, but they couldn't compose it so... reused Osaki's "leftower".

Anyway - is this even legal?
