COCX-33021~30: Space Battleship Yamato CD-BOX
I need some assistance from people on this, I figured this is the best place to post it.
1) looks like they are reprinting this album on 2/15/2012, but it has the same catalogue number. How do we handle that? 2) my cdjapan artist alert said Joe Hisaishi is an arranger on cd 5/6 and I swear he has come up on Y!J auction searches with Yamato albums but I don't know the length of his involvement in the series. Did he do arrangements only? Compositions? I'm having a hard time tracking down info on these because they're all very old albums and it's difficult to match search results because hisaishi composed for otoko-tachi no Yamato which is unrelated and way more recent. Long story short I'm trying to determine if it's worth buying this box or if I should just buy this individual album instead (they're printing each disc in the box separately, too) Here's to hoping someone can help! |

I think a similar case on the reprintings may have come up in the past. As a first pass, if it is apparent that they changed the packaging in some way, I think we may want a separate entry. However, if they are just resurrecting the old printing with another run, perhaps we should just use this entry. In that case, we may also need to investigate the idea of multiple print dates for albums that phase in and out of print over the years.
I'm not sure about Joe Hisaishi. I had hoped to dive in and put up the whole Yamato discography, but I just haven't had the time, and have a huge backlog of other submissions and code to write before I should do that. Those discs you mention contain music from the series and movie that came out in 1980, and this seems to predate his involvement in films, so it doesn't seem likely. For what it's worth, I loved the music from the series, but I don't know if you should put that in the plus or minus column. :P |

I think it's too hard to tell if somethings changed because we don't have a lot of info on this to begin with.
Joe did a lot of arrangements from 79-82 before he started composing for films and anime so I think the arranger part is probably accurate. I'm just not sure how much he did, and these are all from the 1978-1980 old LPs so info is scarce. I'll keep checking y!j I guess! |

He arranged the choral version side of the Yamato thing on 5/6. The lp was choral piano on side a and side b was some raideen thing.

Hey, I finally finished reviewing disc 1! Maybe I'll make it through the others faster because of repeat performers????
classification guide:
Definitely: Akira Ishikawa, Masaoki Terakawa, Yoshio Kimura, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Kaoru Iiyoshi, Hideo Ichikawa, Isao Kanayama, Yukio Eto, Takashi Asahi, Akira Miyashita, Masanobu Arao, Yasuo Hirauchi, Sumio Okada, Eiji Arai (already in the DB!), Harumi Mita, Motoe Miyajima, Kazuo Uchino, Shuhei Kubo, Kiyoshi Osawa, Masatsugu Shinozaki, Yoshinori Tada, Kou Miyauchi, Tomio Yajima, Hidekiyo Hirano, Mitsuo Otsu* (bumped up from likely) Likely: Naoki Yamamoto, Minoru Ishiyama, Fumiharu Murata, Koji Yamaguchi, Youichi Yamamoto, Matsue Yamahata, Shigeru Toyama, Takeshi Kobayashi, Yuuji Fukuda, Katsumasa Nozawa, Yutaka Tomohiro, Tatsuo Kodagawa, Yoshiaki Nakatsuka, Sayaka Kunori, Katsuhiro Shinoda, Katsuhiko Hayashi, Tatsuya Miyake, Shinroku Mogi Naoki Yamamoto: MPN gives the same reading as DrillSpin, and it also identifies him as a classical percussionist specifically. A Naoki Yamamoto apparently performed glockenspiel and vibraphone on the 1977 Naoya Matsuoka album Joyful Feet. Minoru Ishiyama: Flutist Toshiaki Yokota's Japanese site lists 石山実 as a percussionist on the 1971 album Primitive Community, and the English page lists him as Minoru Ishiyama. Fumiharu Muraoka: Looks like you mean Murata, not Muraoka. Koji Hatori: There's apparently a Koji Hadori on this album: http://vgmdb.net/album/20821. The back scan is unfortunately way too small for me to verify. Masanobu Arao is there too. 下館広起: Does the booklet definitely say 下館? I also get a few horn hits for 下舘広起. Hiroki Shimodate is by far the likeliest reading I think, but I didn't have any luck finding that anywhere. Takeshi Kobayashi: I don't think this is the same Takeshi Kobayashi in the database, whose Japanese Wikipedia article says he plays keyboard and bass. There is apparently a "renown Japanese violinist" with the same name: http://www.akiraifukube.org/violin_concerto_2.htm. 小林啓泰: This page lists a "Hiroyasu Kobayashi" with several other performers from here, but without instruments listed: http://www.iyobetomiji.jp/album/comm...er10years.html. 茂木新六: 新六 can be read "Shinroku," so I suspect this is an error for 茂木新緑, Shinroku Mogi: http://www.f-kreis.com/guest1.htm. 小林行雄 / 小橋行雄: Four-character Chinese names are pretty rare (although definitely possible). 小林 is usually Kobayashi and 小橋 is usually Kobashi, so the similarity makes me think you're right and one is a typo for the other. As for which one of the two is right, I have no idea! Last edited by CHz; Mar 24, 2012 at 03:54 PM. |

You're right, I don't have a scanner (it's broken) but even if I did, scanning these would prove difficult since it's a fairly well-binded book that I don't want to ruin the binding on by spreading it out and scanning it. What I do is take a picture with my phone and use the image to do the radical lookup, and I reference the booklet for anything fuzzy or unclear. There are a lot of pages where the artists are sitting right on the binding so it's hard to get a good shot of those, and I had to reference the book for those, but I will provide them anyway.
Here is Disc 1, I'll update the other discs as I complete them with what I have stored locally. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40726643/disc1.zip If you need any pictures retaken for clarity, let me know. Some of them are particularly fuzzy because I have to try and hold the camera and hold open the booklet at the same time. :/ |

Thanks for those shots. I was worried when you said they were phone shots, but they were better than I was expecting!
I double-checked all your yellows and reds. Additional disc 1 comments: 初鹿野可 -> 初鹿野司 I found a couple of German references to a violinist Tsukasa Hatsukano, who's part of the Orchester Staatstheater Darmstadt: http://www.staatstheater-darmstadt.d...sukano-tsukasa. Could be him. 牟藤伸二 You've transcribed this correctly, but I believe this may be a misprint for Shinji Mutou (武藤伸二): http://www.kunitachi.ac.jp/education...to_shinji.html. 黒柳万晶 -> 黒柳方晶 Still unsure about reading. Masaaki Kuroyanagi? 福島明 Just realized I skipped this one in my review. Looks right in the pic, but perhaps this is a mistake for the Akira Fukushima (福島粲) on disc 2? |

Disc 2!
Definitely: Shuichi Murakami, Takao Naoi, Naomi Kawahara, Nagahisa Kasamatsu, Kunitoshi Shinohara, Akira Uchida, Yasuko Seki, Yukio Kaneda, Hiromichi Nakase, Junji Suganuma, Hiroshi Yasukawa, Kentaro Haneda, Katsuyoshi Kurosawa (黒沢勝義), Masayuki Yamashiro, Takeru Shiraiso, Yasukazu Amemiya (already in the DB), Toshihiko Sakai, Gensei Nakayama, Yasutaka Watanabe, Yoichiro Kobayashi, Shigeo Fujimaki, Mitsuo Otsu* (bumped up from likely), Kyoichi Watanabe Likely: Takuo Shimura, Keiko Abe, Tadashi Setogawa, Masao Kawabata, Toshiyuki Koumon, Akira Tabuchi (田淵章), Takeo Sugano, Michikatsu Shinohara, Tatsuo Kuriaki, Kensei Tomeda, Ko Hirai, Yoshiaki Nakatsuka, Akiyoshi Kudo, Tsunehiko Niwa, Satoshi Idoji (伊堂寺仁), Kinji Tatebe, Masuo Niino, Michio Setogawa, Takemasa Matsumoto, Yonosuke Segami, Junko Nobata, Atsushi Sugahara, Yoshitaka Enomoto, Akira Fukushima, Setsuo Fujiwara, Hidehiko Sugawara, Akira Watanabe, Akio Seki Maybe: Minoru Kuribayashi, Taizo Nakajima, Toshiki Fujisawa (藤沢敏雄) Stumped: 吉永洋, 奏中司郎, 田中一郎, 角田智寿子, 古谷万一, 今岡宏, 鈴木良雄, 兼氏康雄, 関斉, 矢島三雄 栗原稔: 栗原 would usually be Kurihara (or Kuribara), and there is a bassist Minoru Kurihara with that name. However, given there's a Minoru Kuribayashi that appears later, your theory that there's an error here sounds plausible. Naomi Kawahara: I couldn't find anything definitive for the name, but it does seem 直美 is more prevalant than 直実. I also saw a few hits for ナオミ・カワハラ in katakana. 奏中司郎: Tried some variations and got several clarinet hits on 泰中司朗. I think the likeliest reading of this would be Shirou (or Jirou) Tainaka. Taizo Nakajima: "flh" does seem to be flugelhorn, yeah. It is a similar instrument to the trumpet. (Don't have any comments on the reading of this guy's name, sorry. :x) Tadashi Setogawa: I noticed during disc 1, and I'm noticing again through these, that a number of the musicians here seemed to have been affiliated with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. I wonder how big a part they were in this "Symphonic Orchestra Yamato." (Again, no reading comment. :xx) 田淵章: Based on common performers on other albums, I would bet real life money that this is supposed to be Akira Tabuchi (田渕 彰). 古谷万一: I found a couple of hits on 古谷方一 (Masakazu Furuya / Furutani?). Junji Suganuma: Junzi Suganuma on this album: http://vgmdb.net/album/395. 鈴木良雄: Those links for Yoshio Suzuki are for a bassist, not a violist. I didn't have any luck finding a violist with that name. 藤沢敏雄: It seems there's a cellist Toshiki Fujisawa (藤沢俊樹) in the database. That one is a kind of a longshot. 伊堂寺仁: It is actually possible for the name 仁 to be read Satoshi (far more likely Hitoshi or Jin, but posssible nevertheless), so you're probably right. 兼氏康雄: There's a clarinetist Norio Kaneuji (兼氏規雄) who would be my best guess. However, I don't think it's possible to read 康雄 as Norio, so that'd be a big error in the booklet. 黒沢勝義: This is surely the Katsuyoshi Kurosawa found on disc 5. It seems his name appears more commonly as 黒澤勝義. Junko Nobata: It is possible to read 野畑 as Nobatake (畑 = hatake), but it does look like you're right and her name is Nobata. Here's an album she apparently cut? http://www.musicstack.com/item/203966341 Akira Fukushima: Don't have any additional sources, but in addition to the 福島明 on disc 1, maybe this is the 福島あきら who performed on a couple of Shining Force albums. 矢島三雄: Mitsuo Yajima? Found exactly one reference to this name: http://www18.ocn.ne.jp/~phonom/pM-INWS-CD.htm. Last edited by CHz; Mar 25, 2012 at 03:57 PM. |

For my reference, how do you want these done when when we're all said and done? Do you only want me adding/linking artists in the definitely category, or both definitely and likely? I assume that the maybe and stumped categories won't be added. For the album info section, do definitelys get converted to just the English name and the likelys get converted to kanji (english) and the maybes/stumpeds stay as just kanji? Or do you want definitelys and maybes converted to English and just maybes/stumped as kanji?
I'm creating local text files that just contain the album info parts so I can just copy and paste them when I'm done. The artist linking part will be ... fun. |

As for linking artists, I'd just link whatever you put in the notes: English for English and kanji for kanji. We don't really have a problem here with linking Japanese names if we don't know the reading. Even if the name's in error like I suspect a few are, if that's how it's printed, then it's worth preserving IMO (at least until the artist gets an artist entry with the proper name, where it can be added as a variation). I suspect the maximum size of the performer field in the database will be a hindrance to your linking artists here, if you decide to gut it out. And maybe this album would be a good catalyst to implement that feature to collapse the artist fields on album pages. :] Just one correction: 藤沢敏雄 -> 藤沢敏樹 Since 敏樹 can be read Toshiki, I'm now quite certain this is the cellist Toshiki Fujisawa already in the database. I see that he apparently worked on disc 3 too. |

Disc 3 in record time:
I found a couple of random hits for a guitarist Mitsuo Murakami, notably on the Nozomi Aoki album 1999 A.D. Satoru Umeda: Seems his name is occasionally misread Manabu Umeda, like here: http://www.iyobetomiji.jp/visual/comm/98pioneer.html. 多田吉徳: This is the Yoshinori Tada you identified on discs 1 & 2, exact same characters. Did you miscopy something, maybe? 田中栄一: I think this is probably a different person from the engineer. I don't know if this is the same person on this album, but of all things, here's an article from a Pennsylvania paper from 1969 featuring an Eiichi Tanaka of the Japan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra: http://news.google.com/newspapers?ni...g=4537,3380602. Noriko Ishioka: A Noriko Ishioka performed on this album: http://vgmdb.net/album/356. 小沢豊: I noticed accidentally while searching names in this thread that you skipped this cellist in your review. This should be Yutaka Ozawa: [MPN] [performed on this album with Tomio Yajima and Toshiki Fujisawa]. |

Again, spine ones are hard to get a clear steady picture of, if you need a resnap let me know. Tada duplicate was a mistake, the first instance is supposed to be: "加藤高志" 加藤高志 (Takashi Kato) [Previously established vgmdb artist] I'm going to assume this one is a Definitely. The second instance is the correct one. |

Yeah, I think we can pretty safely say that one's Takashi Kato.
If you could get a better shot of the violinist 内田道子, I'd appreciate that. EDIT: Meant to also say that I checked through the names and didn't have any corrections or anything to add. Last edited by CHz; Mar 26, 2012 at 10:13 PM. |

Is there a credit for which studio or engineer did the remastering?
More of a stretch, but could anyone comment on the quality of the remastering? Are the discs noticably louder than the original pressings? |

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40726643/miscCredits.jpg I can't speak to the remastering of it, but I imagine it sounds better simply from going from vinyl late 70s early 80s source to digital/cd. |
