I'm very interested in those samples.

Any updates for Nintendo games?
I still have a craze for Zelda/DKC/Mario samples/presets

They'll be in the 'Remasters and Origins' subfolder. The rest of the folders are the raw samples from the game ROMs (ripped using SPCTool)

I'm very interested in any access you can get me to this 'Ensoniq CDR" sound library as well

There's actually only two metal hits in Misty Menace, but both are played extremely high and extremely low. One is a tambourine (SPARK1 from the R-8 layered with a long noise sound from the JD-800) used in Aquatic Ambience to mimic the sonar sound of a submarine, and the other is some kind of metallic hit (which I haven't been able to locate) most commonly used for the steel keg.
I wanna know where that keg sound comes from too.

Finally found a source for the other Gradius III orchestra hit. It's "HIT-07" on the "Vol. 8: General MIDI Sets" CD for the Akai S-3000. Granted, this was released well after Gradius III was made, but I think this sample might well have existed in an earlier Akai library that I haven't been able to get my hands on yet (such as one of the S-900/950 libraries). From what I can tell having looked through so many libraries, samples often get recycled between them like that.

I have an... uhh... interesting find. I don't know if it's completely relevant since it's not technically from a video game, but it's from a track that was definitely inspired by a video game.

Gröûp X - Stepping on the Crowtche of Your American President
  • "Carnival Midway" from "K-tel's Best Of Cartoon & Movie Sound F-X" was used in 13 "Mario Twins"

Donkey Kong Country
  • JP.8 Strings from the Roland U-220 used everywhere throughout the game
  • Syn. Vox 2 from the Roland U-220 (sampled at a low note) used in Aquatic Ambience and Fear Factory
  • Percs Hit from the Roland U-220 used for the steel keg sound

If anyone has a U-20 or U-220, clean samples of these would be appreciated

I do have a U-220, but work is keeping me busy recently so it might be a while before I can get things around to sample it.

Looks like Super Street Fighter II Turbo's quacky synth lead is "Fusion Solo" from the JD-800.

Edit: I do have some samples of Syn Vox 2 taken from a JV-80 that I grabbed off the internet at some point:
1
2
3
Also here's what appears to be the source version of the sample, from a Roland S-50 library:
1
2 (Different multisample)

Thank you felineki. The synth voice patch isn't sounding quite right. It may have been layered with Syn.Choir

I've noticed that Wild Arms and Alundra seem to share a lot of sounds. The strings in both have a distinctive, 'plasticky' sort of feel to them. Does anybody know what library(s) Kohei Tanaka and Michiko Naruke used?

The first Vandal Hearts' timpani comes from the E-mu Proteus 2. Here is the synthmania 'test' of the sound, and if you compare to the track "Bygone Days 3 (Reen and Keese)", you will notice that the timpani is, indeed, from the Proteus 2. I also suspect that many, many more sounds used in Vandal Hearts originate with the Proteus 2.

I've heard it elsewhere too, but I don't remember where exactly. That electronic rhythm loop is definitely a sample.

Only semi-related, but i just came across a movie clip with the famous Capcom lead guitar.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK9X41GxWSo

Also notice another guitar, sounds like the mega man guitar, though it seems to stem from the same patch, but it just at a lower key...That's interesting.

It's my pleasure. I'm stoked that somewhere on the Internet cares about this.

SEGA sure was fond of Polestar Magnetics!

Sonic Shuffle

A Silver Drop
  • Track 77, sample 8 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

Battle Of Bloom
  • Down In D Goldmine, sample 16 (Polestar Magnetics - The X-Static Goldmine)

Blizzard Of The Coast
  • Track 74, sample 6 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

Dark Sharpener
  • Track 13, sample 6 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 2])

Hi Tata
  • Track 77, sample 9 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])
  • Track 84, sample 9 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

In The Bargain
  • Track 77, sample 6 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

Mystic Asia
  • Track 79, sample 9 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

Sombrero
  • Track 88, sample 5 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 2])

Space Encounter
  • Track 56, sample 8 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])
  • Track 74, sample 6 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])
  • Track 88, sample 2 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

Under Galaxy
  • Track 74, sample 24 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

With Go V-Train
  • Track 82, sample 6 (Polestar Magnetics - XL1 [Disc 1])

I know there's more Sonic Shuffle stuff on the re-released X-Static Goldmine libraries they put out as e-LAB, but I have not procured copies of those yet.

I was surprised to see nobody had found anything from F-Zero. Allow me to rectify this!

F-Zero GX

Osc-Sync Carnival
  • Throatline 02B 43-03 (Methods Of Mayhem: Industrial Toolkit)

I wouldn't be surprised if it uses the individual synth voices, but I couldn't find any other loops.

I had some difficulty finding out who actually made Methods Of Mahem. It is varyingly credited to myriad divisions of Sony, who apparently sold the rights to their Sounds Good series of libraries recently. The release I have indicates Sonic Foundry as the author.

Jet Set Radio

Deavid Soul - On The Bowl (A. Fargus Mix)
  • VOX HM-017 (Best Service - Housemaster)
  • VOX HM-018 (Best Service - Housemaster)

Sonic Shuffle

Miss Conduct
  • 1303 DR.LOOP (e-LAB - X-Static Goldmine 3)

Rave About Me
  • 1301 DR.LOOP (e-LAB - X-Static Goldmine 3)
  • 1303 DR.LOOP (e-LAB - X-Static Goldmine 3)

I actually maintain my own list, but it has links to all of the samples I've spotted. Posting it sounds like it'd be against the rules.

I just came across another booklet credit for sample usage. Apparently, the animation series FAIRY TAIL uses samples by AMG.

Nisto, I noticed you mention "Sounds Good: Sample Material" and "Sonic Foundry: Ambient Grooves" as if they're different libraries. But aren't they the same? As far as I see "Sample Material" has exactly the same content as "Ambient Grooves". Even the covers are similar, with "Ambient Grooves" just having that text on top of the "Sample Material" cover. Was probably just re-released under the Sonic Foundry/Sony flag later. But maybe I'm missing something here.

Yes, they most likely are. It may have been mentioned by someone else, and in those circumstances I've used the exact release title. I don't have the original library (Sample Material) myself, so I'm not sure they're 100% identical. Do you have Sample Material?

No I don't have it, was just based on the tracklist of Sample Material vs the sample names of Ambient Grooves, and of course the cover.
http://www.silent-watcher.net/billla...ematerial.html
e.g. your sample from the first page: the sample name is "Ambient FX 08-11". The 08-11 probably stands for Track 8 sample 11 of Sample Material (track 8 is indeed titled "Ambient FX *").

Yeah, it's not uncommon that the filenames, or even printed track titles differ a bit between re-releases. When I do find something myself, I just tend to use the names as they are in whichever release I'm looking through. There are also lots of documented CDDA library samples where I haven't found any track titles, or didn't even bother to look for them, which I've just documented as "Track xx" (sample xx). The index needs some reworking, really.

wasn't meant as trying to find a fault anywhere btw, or anything like that. great project. was mostly just curious about the Sample Material CD myself while looking into Bill Laswell stuff, and then found out it seems to be more or less the same as Ambient Grooves, so I kinda wanted to see what this is about.

First of all, greetings. This is my first post, and I'm hoping I'll enjoy it here.

Lately I've been on a bit of a sample-hunting spree. Many I've already found, but others I'm still struggling to find the origin of even after all these years.

As an example of the latter, I'm almost at the point of pulling out my hair trying to find the source of this musical effect, which plays at about 10 seconds in.

One might believe that the composer hand crafted it himself for the game. While it is the earliest instance I've found so far of it, I know it has been used in other soundtracks: it was also used in one of the worlds of The Crystal Key, and, while not a game, can also be heard in some of the cues for Shaun of the Dead.

Anyone here have any idea where it came from?
