I thought the -tora naming scheme was a bit odd, but now it makes sense. The joke here is that santora (サントラ) is short for soundtrack (サウンドトラック).

I guess Kanno decided to be a bit punny this time.

Well yeah, the double meaning is what makes it a pun. Though I guess I should have mentioned that part. I doubt it's a coincidence considering they chose to write it in katakana.

It wouldn't really work if they did it in kanji (一虎/二虎/三虎).

The naming was "confirmed" in the last tweet here:
https://twitter.com/i/moments/864415...Fpost-273.html

On top of what was already written above, the second album was intentionally written ニィトラ to look more like ニャン (meow in Japanese). Yoko Kanno also added some cat paws inside the booklet and the last track featured ニャンケイ's meow (he's the cat owned by the monk in the show).

Here's Nyankei on Twitter:

Can any musical wiz confirm if it was a Bassoon playing as the main instrument in Moon Boat Returns?

I am not by any means a musical expert but that sounds like a saxophone to me, so probably the Alto Saxophone credit to Nobuya Sugawa

Thanks for the swift response. I thought it was a sax too, plus it has almost the same reverb she used for Space Lion.

Though, there's a little brassy character that only the bassoon can produce when playing the high notes.

Like this

Anyway, I might be wrong and would love to find out. Better yet, if there's ever a live concert of the whole soundtrack.
