Within a Dead City is a tiny 4X game about managing a roster of heroes as they explore the ruins of an ancient city. The game can be played for free on itch.io.
For the soundtrack, I wanted to go with something ethereal. I felt the music should reflect the exploratory vibe, like you were disturbing the dust on a building that hadn't been touched in centuries. To that end, I kept the tempos slow and unhurried (with the exception of the final track). The Breath of the Wild soundtrack was a big inspiration, and the in-game version of the soundtrack purposefully has silences of a minute or two between songs.
The final game ended up being more combat-focused than I initially envisioned. It was a two-month game project, so I needed to follow the paths my prototype lead me down. No time for side quests! Perhaps that works against the vibe of the music, perhaps not.
