I'm not a huge WWII historian or anything, but it seems to me that all Sugiyama is trying to do is make the case that women who became "comfort women" did so of their own volition and were never forced into it...and, if any were (and of course some were) that the Japanese military did not condone it and punished people who were involved in such matters.

We can still say "eww, brothels for the military" and argue the moral bankruptcy of the whole endeavor, but I don't quite see a problem with what it is that Sugiyama is contending. Anyone wanna tell me what I'm missing here...?
