It is directly connected to Chrono Trigger's plot as well as Radical Dreamers. I know it isn't the same, but I'm one of the people who really loved Chrono Cross.

I wasn't terribly impressed by most of Xenoblade's soundtrack either, although it had some good tracks. As for the game, it's made by the same person who did Xenogears/Saga, so it's probably connected to the overall mythology/feel in his mind.
