The difference is, with physical 500 extra copies has production costs and storage space that may not be worth it. With digital, the cost to wait for 500 to sell is virtually nil.
And what's more, if it's not offered any where, there's absolutely 0% of anyone who didn't get it to obtain it legally. With a physical release there's always used copies.
