Yeah, the artist fields need to match what they are linked as, in order for the search to pick them up. If they don't, they need to be edited.
As for adjusting the search to find aliases too, I don't know. It might lead to some unintended results, like if an artist used "Jun" as an alias, it would return many extra results.
