Ah, guess my fix worked then. Our thumbnails are being proxied through Cloudflare, and I happened to switch on SSL as an experiment exactly one year ago.
Seems like the SSL certificate has expired. There's no way to manually change it on a free Cloudflare account (it's just an SSL on/off switch) so I turned it off.
