Other than asking Hiroki Kikuta himself, any assumptions we make about the intended meaning will remain assumptions, so it's a safer bet to just use the original English novel titles as they are -- plus it comes with the benefit of a more "natural" phrasing, as your last paragraph mentions.
Unless you're talking about using non-English novel titles, in that case I have no problem with Les Huit Coups de l'horloge as the trackname for 八点鐘, and possibly others.
