Kanno writes simple melodies, but uses a lot of extended/jazzy chords regardless of the genre she writes in. She likes to combine acoustic sounds and ethnic instruments with electronic elements or synthesizers, even in her old 80s and 90s stuff. She borrows a lot from composers like Vangelis, Danny Elfman, and John Williams.
Her soundtracks also have lots of vocal themes and she likes to work with vocalists from other countries. Sometimes she herself sings on tracks, usually in a made up language, and always credited as "Gabriela Robin".
