Default Your favourite or most treasured soundtracks.

Another one of these threads :P
Eternal Arcadia (Skies of Arcadia) OST is my favourite soundtrack in the whole world that I can listen to from start to finish and enjoy every moment of it. This is followed very closely by FFVIII OST.

My most treasured soundtrack is Contra Spirits (Super Contra SNES) and I would like to be buried with it as it took me YEARS to find a copy complete and in awesome condition.

So what about you guys? Favourites and most treasured??

My most treasured soundtracks are probably Fuujin Ryouiki Eretzvaju and Rage of the Dragons. Incidentally, they also qualify as favorites, though that list is much longer. I couldn't make any sort of hierarchy out of it and pick the few "most favorites" out.

I guess rarity comes into play for prized possessions, but for me, part of it is also how much I like a soundtrack. I'm not going to pay a large price for something rare if I don't absolutely love it. At any rate, those two soundtracks are both pretty rare and great soundtracks, so I guess that's what makes them a couple of my favorite CDs to own, even if I wouldn't pick either of them as my "favorite soundtrack of all time".

It really is very difficult to pick out a defining favourite. But for me Eternal Arcadia just stands about above the rest and the fact that I have listened to it a ton and have not gotten bored of it suggests to me it is my favourite. There are albums out there though with individual tracks that I would consider better but as an album, no.

Yes, exactly. Is my favorite album the most consistent one, or the one that reaches the highest highs (but the lowest lows)? And then, is it the high-energy fighting game soundtrack, or the emotional visual novel soundtrack? It can be tough to equate it all.

Eternal Arcadia... I'm actually not too familiar with it. I never played the game, and now that I think about it, I'm not sure I have any sort of digital copy of it either (I certainly don't own a copy, it's far too expensive). I'll have to look into giving it a listen sometime. Looking at its ratings here, it seems you're not alone in your praise of it.

My favorite would be my Singing the Stars ~ Hoshiyomi Ar tonelico Hymmnos Concert Side Blue, but my most treasured one would be my horizon blue CD.

I remember when the original Rockman 1-6 Boxset was released. Rumor was that it was going to be a distressingly small release, with little commercial availability. Couldn't take chances on missing it, so I coughed up significantly more than its face value (and later, retail value). Worth every penny. One of those VGM cornerstones.

My Falcom Perfect Collections were costly to acquire, yet worth it for their old-school sound. I'm amazed they haven't reprinted either the Sorcerian or Ys IV Perfect Collections in the FMS. I feel similar about the Special Boxes (91-94), but not as strongly. I was actually kind of sad the other day, went looking for my FSB 96 to rip the lone music disc and forgot I sold it awhile back.

I was able to pick up a real Game Music Graffiti surprisingly cheap a few years ago and that is definitely up there as far as both quality and rarity goes (the Famicom Disk tracks aside). That and the first Phantasy Star Collection were pretty much my holy grails that I had forever on CD-R and I wanted originals of, and I'm happy to have both. The lone grail that has eluded me is the original Estpolis I and II release. I've probably missed this at least 5 times over the years. But oh well, I have the actual music.

Some of my albums have been in constant rotation for awhile now, so anything I acquired in 1998-2001 and still have and still listen to, I have a soft spot for.

Edit: But if we're just talking straight favorites, my common-as-dirt FFVI OSV of course is up there. I just tend not to listen to it that often because FFVI was literally all I played for about 8 months solid and I know everything on it by heart.

I'd say my most treasured soundtrack is the Darius Premium Box -Rebirth-. I have much respect for OGR as a composer and I really like the later soundtracks in the series (G-Darius and Darius Gaiden). While it isn't the main reason it is my most treasured soundtrack, a part of the reasoning lies in the fact that I own the only autographed copy of that box set.

SILENT HILL 2 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACKS. Over and out.

Seriously though, if I were allowed to pick a box, I'd take the whole SH box. Yamaoka is genius. But I feel like my favorites change rather frequently -- I guess my top 5 (with SH stuff excluded) would have to include these at least: Final Fantasy VIII-X; Abandoner and Biohazard 2.

Call me mainstream, but at this point I've heard quite a few obscure VGM albums as well, and I can't say they outclass any of the above (IMO).. Or at least they don't have as much "replay value" as those in my top 5 (i.e. the tracks get boring after 5-10 times through). I consider favorites stuff that I can listen to for forever without ever getting tired of any of the tracks. Perhaps I'm also biased with nostalgia, but SH2 (the game) for example, I have never even played (sure will try it eventually though). Anyway, I guess most of the stuff from late 90s/early 00s is what rocks my boat.

EDIT: I guess there's really a difference between favorite and treasured. I suppose in that case, my most treasured soundtrack would have to be Digimon World.

Most treasured soundtrack: Bloody Roar 3 Soundtrack
Favourites (Top 3): Final Fantasy X-2 Original Soundtrack [minus the vocal songs), BIOHAZARD 6 Original Soundtrack, Dynasty Warriors 4 Original Soundtrack

I must first admit I'm guilty, though, I don't judge an Original Soundtrack out of its context, I think that's an unfair and pretty damn stupid thing to do, to be honest. Most of the tracks we find on an album have been composed to accompany a specific scene, or part of the game. Sure, we may like them or not as a stand alone listen, but such things won't matter to anyone but ourselves, it won't really determine if an Original Soundtrack is a success, or a failure.

They Bloody Roar 3 Soundtrack may not be offering anything special, but what can I say... It holds sentimental value to me. "Dangerous Expectation" and "Love and Hate" sound pretty good, I think they do a perfect job at getting you in the mood to unleash the beast within and rip away. Too bad there weren't specific characters' themes, though, would have liked to hear what else they could do with Yugo Ogami

In regards to the other three I've mentioned, I'll just say that to me they're an "eargasm" after the other.... Especially the track "EVE" on the DW4 Original Soundtrack.

The Bloody Roar 3 soundtrack absolutely offers something special: ridiculously awesomely fun music. No joke on this, I was already thinking about making it my next purchase. I love that soundtrack. And as far as DW4 is concerned, Eve is a nice pick. Our tastes seem very similar.

Treasured soundtrack, I dunno. Maybe Cosmic Psycho. Maybe La Pucelle.
Favorite soundtrack, I do know. SaGa Frontier. Eretzvaju and Soul Calibur III are fantastic as well.

That's why, for me, up to this day, the American McGee's Alice soundtrack is one of the most accomplished ones I've experienced in VGM. Perfect synthesis of picture and sound. On a list of favorite VGM however (pure standalone listening), I'd put others first, even if I love the music outside of the game as well.

My philosophy differs. I know from playing plenty of games what kind of sound I'm looking for, so an unknown soundtrack that sounds similar to oldschool Rockman or classic Final Fantasy will tend to be welcomed in (I've always likened oldschool Falcom albums to Rockman RPG music). Which is good, because a lot of soundtracks I enjoy belong to games I have either no intention of playing or were never released in the US.

Also, I tend to prefer music that does exist out of context better. If it can't stand on its own, rarely do I want to hear it in context. Very few exceptions to this.

Edit: And just to contribute something, early on in my VGM life, I bought two CD's on sale from Tokyopop on impulse (anyone remember back when they sold VGM?) that turned out to be two real classics: Waku Puyo Dungeon OST and Zuntata La'b Normal 1. Both turned out to be amazing pickups that I still listen to today. Waku Puyo is a cool cutesy melodic RPG soundtrack with good synth (I think it's based on the Saturn sound chip) and La'b Normal 1 had a lot of the early Zuntata classics, before I knew what a Zuntata was (Ninja Warriors, Night Striker, Darius I and II, Rastan). Sure, I'm not as attached to them as I am with the ones I listed above, but they stand out as being great "unknown" purchases (before the days when you could just randomly download an album and sample it).

Final Fantasy VIII OST / Fithos Lusec Orchestra / Piano Collection -- I *think* this is my favorite Uematsu work.

Metroid Prime/Fusion OST -- I think this is the only first-party Nintendo OST in my current collection ... I really only like the Prime half. But man do I love that music.

NieR OST -- the newest album in my collection that I can identify as a true "treasure." Will never ever sell it.

Piano Pieces SaGa Frontier 2 ~ Rhapsody -- hands-down the best piano arranged CD ever, SO different from the rest of the piano arranges out there. Impressionist stylings at its best. And the "Rhapsody" portion (chamber orchestra) at the end? WOW, what a finale!

Uncharted Waters II Special Edition -- Probably my favorite Yoko Kanno work (though I also love the Napple Tale CDs). I love that each arrangement is so different from the last, though most of it is rooted quite vaguely and broadly in the realms of "jazz" and "world" music.

Xenogears CREID -- this album has stuck with me forever and never gets old. For me, this is the culmination of everything I like about Mitsuda.

Ys VI Ark of Napishtim OST -- I think the test of time has proven this to be one of the best OSTs in the series. I know many others will go back to II or III/Felghana. But for me I've really come to love this OST. And the game too ... I love this game!

(also, cheating -- SaGa box, Seiken box, FFXI box. When you got a whole box set, there's *something* in there that's awesome. For SaGa, my favs are the first two games, RS3, SF2, and Minstrel Song. For Seiken ... GameBoy original (and its orchestral arrange), SD2, SD3, Legend of Mana. For FFXI, it's the OST proper, Promathia expansion, and the piano collection unique to the box)

Due solely to this thread, I have "aquired" a digital copy of the Eternal Arcadia soundtrack. I've never played the game or heard the music before, but on first listen (as I type this, I'm up to Battle 1 so far), I must say I can see why this soundtrack is so valued. Thank you for introducing me to it!

Mines would have to be Sonic Adventure 2 multi-dimension original soundtrack.

Such variety of music genre that all sound awesome. Not to mention that this album has been bootlegged to death. So many fakes out there, it's almost impossible to find a genuine and complete copy out there.

Favourite: Axelay. It's just all around solid composing that I admire with superb sound quality.

Treasured: Super Metroid. I had a deep connection to this game as a kid and the atmospheric music added so much to the experience.

Those are fantastic selections. I presently own zero of those CDs. In my life I think I've owned two of them (Lost Tech Plus and Impetuth). Having a new/sealed PSC2 makes you instantly "wealthy" in collectors' terms.

Heh, I'm not even that big of a fan of PS Sound Collection 2 and I'm envious of a sealed copy (I'm a fan of the original game and its soundtrack). It's one of those albums I want to have, but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger on.

I remember how giddy I was to land a copy of the first Sound Collection though. Old school PS music was right up there with Final Fantasy and Falcom music. The newer stuff is much more of an acquired taste...One that hasn't gone down too smoothly, compared to the old stuff.

For the longest time I believe Mystic Ark was my most treasured soundtrack, it's still my favorite one to this day and that probably won't ever change.
When I recently had the once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire Popotan and Project-μ Best 35 I discovered I value these more, as physical copies at least. It's the rare combination of good music and absolute non-availability. None have the sentimental value that Mystic Ark has, though
