That would have been like $40 a few years ago. |

To get a better idea of who contributed what in this soundtrack, I think I have an idea having played the game.
Quote:
Here's the full Beach theme he wrote, it has some SFX, but just for reference now that we have a lot of the music on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nI_Q21WLBw HOWEVER, there are two Athletic themes in this game. There's a second Athletic theme which actually uses the same melody as the Beach theme. Here's the Athletic theme I'm talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw65iHvG_5I As you can hear, it's the same theme as the Beach theme, but faster. It gives me a nice Super Mario World/Yoshi's Island vibe. I don't think it's a mere coincidence that Kondo stated he "wrote one of the Athletic and Beach themes," and one of the Athletic themes just HAPPENS to share the same melody as his Beach theme. Clearly he wrote it. |

I thought the same thing as mario54671 while playing the game.
I really wasn't expecting this soundtrack to be so good based on the tune they used in the trailers and the first level, which still doesn't sit right with me. The first section of the melody seems like an imitation of Mario music and isn't strong enough to be the theme of a game, but thankfully, despite using an arrangement of it as the menu music, it's really not used much more in the rest of the game. The other music is quite nice and there's a luxurious amount of it. Hope I can get a copy of this album. |

It'd seem like too much of a coincidence though. Koji Kondo stated that he wrote two tracks, an Athletic theme and a Beach theme, and of the two existing Athletic themes, one of them just happens to share the same melody as his Beach theme. Let's not forget, Koji Kondo used to ALWAYS do this in his older soundtracks when he was the lead composer. Super Mario World, practically everything is an arrangement of the main theme. Super Mario 64, you've got Bob-omb Battlefield, Snow Mountain, and Slider are all different versions of the same melody. Super Mario Sunshine, Delfino Plaza, Bianco Hills, Ricco Harbor, Gelato Beach, and Staff Roll (all of which he composed) are all different versions of the same melody. It'd be a neat coincidence, then we'd have more Koji Kondo originality within this new soundtrack, but I won't believe it until it's confirmed. Quote:
I mean, it follows typical Mario fashion. In most Mario games, it's always the secondary themes that turn out to be the most memorable, like SMW and SM64 where you tend to remember the Athletic/Slider themes more than the regular Overworld themes. (Despite the fact that, in both games, the "Athletic" music is just a faster arrangement of the overworld theme) The difference is, this game's Overworld theme really isn't a strong theme. I find the New Super Mario Bros. theme from the DS that Koji Kondo wrote a stronger theme than this one. Last edited by mario54671; Jan 9, 2014 at 05:42 PM. |

I just translated the entire track list from Japanese to English using my "Super Mario 3D World" Guide and occasional links to the http://super-mario-brothers.org/super-mario-3d-world/ so that I could decode which track was which. My goal was to make the translation look like a real localized one. I hope I succeeded! (Sorry if there are two identical English tracklists. That was a mistake.)

I changed the release date to January 20th, because it's been available since then. At least it's definitely available now, and it's nowhere near January 31st yet.

So the name of the music from Double Cherry Pass is called… Double Cherry Pass! Meanwhile what we've been calling "Athletic Theme 2" is actually just the Athletic theme. So there we go, that's what Koji Kondo wrote. The Seaside and Athletic themes.

I posted the above pictures in the 19th so can't be the 20th. I'm thinking it should be between the 18th or 19th.

I can't say much on Yasuaki Iwata, as I've never seen that name before. Must be a new composer. |

Well the idiot who changed it back to January 31st is an idiot. It's available now, so obviously it's not January 31st.

According to the Japanese Wikipedia article for SM3DW, the February 2014 issue of Nintendo Dream (vol. 238) allegedly gives Yasuaki Iwata's name in Japanese as 岩田恭明.
It also says Shigetoshi Gohara did sound programming, which is consistent with how he's credited in other games (even Galaxy 2, where he arranged a tune). |

Wow, what is up with that track order? The staff roll is the last track on disc 1 and the opening movie is the second on disc 2? Nonsense abounds...
