A reply by RedCode Interactive to a comment on the Youtube Preview (which you can find on previously linked page, along with download links) gives a brief summary of how this album came to be.

Quote:
At first, Suntarys (Vincent Séjourné) had the project of recreating them one by one, but it was too much time consuming and not easy at all. That's when his friend managed to get in contact with Gigi Meroni, the original composer. Turns out he learned that those musics were still in the original tape Gigi Meroni worked 20 years earlier ( = during MGS development) and in his possession. That's when Gigi Meroni agreed on releasing them, so we could get and upload them. TL;DR: Original composer kept the original tapes with the music and Suntarys's friend asked him if he still had it.

Do you have a link to the video and where we can download the score?

edit: Found the link. This is really awesome news! Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry, I haven't been very clear. To anyone else: download links for the album and the album preview on Youtube can be found on RedCode Interactive's Facebook page, which is linked in the opening post.

But did Meroni actually have the rights to release this? I find it somewhat hard to believe a company like Konami wouldn't retain the copyright for it.

That's a good point. I figured that this was done with all the necessary steps being taken, but I guess we don't really know for sure. I'd love to hear some more info regarding this.

I guess one would have to ask that directly to Meroni; I can't provide more information (and on this very specific subject, I wouldn't really trust a reply from RedCode Interactive, either).

I remembered something, isn't this sort of similar to what happened with the Enter the Matrix promo? Did the composer have the rights to produce and sell the album? Didn't the music belong to developers of the game, or maybe even movie company (that video game did use music from the movie franchise), legally speaking?

EDIT:
You know what? Whatever happens, I'm glad I managed to snag this, at last something surfaced.

I haven't listened yet, but are we certain the music is exactly as it appears in the game? I'm thinking it might be a situation similar to what Yasunori Mitsuda did with the soundtrack to Tsugunai. I believe the circumstances were that he didn't have the rights to the exact recordings that were used in the game, but he still owned the rights to the compositions themselves. So he hired Masaaki Kaneko to recreate all of the synths and virtual instruments from scratch and released the soundtrack as an cinniùint (https://vgmdb.net/album/2011).

I doubt that's what happened here, but it is an interesting precedent.

Compare the music the music that starts then to "01 Prologue", they sound pretty much the same to me, but I'm honestly listening through phone+earbuds, since I'm not at home.

I just listened through some nice monitoring headphones and they sound really close. Obviously this new release sounds much cleaner and clearer, but the instruments/synths themselves are almost certain the same.

Hello, I've found Gigi Meroni's official website, in case someone wants to ask him more detailed information about this release: http://sonicvault.us/film-tv-credits/#video-games.

This album also seems to have music that ended up unused/not included in the final version of the game.

It's been a while since I've played MGS. Could someone post timestamps of where each track plays in the game?

I posted the link to a "Longplay video" of this game in message #8 (the first part of the LP, but you can easily find the second one); at the time of this post, both parts of the LP are still online and publicly viewable, you can check on your own.

Now onto something else: I tried to send an e-mail to Gigi Meroni, used the contact form found on his website, but I didn't receive an answer.

First of all, good job. About these two tracks, it's possible that both of them do not appear in the game.

Has anyone managed to contact the composer?
