Default News for Japan goods importers: Japan Post parcel restrictions

18th May Update: EMS will resume to USA and maybe Oceania and Europe. An additional 20% to 70% charge applies on all EMS parcels.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...1/0518_01.html

30th June Update: EMS and air mail has resumed for Italy and New Zealand. All other restrictions remain in effect and the usual shipping delays apply.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...630_01_en.html

18th June Update: EMS and air mail has resumed for various European countries including Sweden, Spain, and Norway etc. All other restrictions remain in effect and the usual shipping delays apply.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...618_01_en.html

23rd April Update: USA joins the "parcel restrictions" list. Spain and other minor countries also join the list.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...423_03_en.html

10th April Update: Several countries join the "heavy restriction of parcels" list: Australia, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, amongst others.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...409_01_en.html

As of the 2nd of April, Japan Post has implemented temporary restrictions on parcels going into and out of Japan.
https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...401_02_en.html

The main takeaways are:

1) Severe restrictions on more than a hundred countries, including a handful like New Zealand which is basically blacklisted.
2) Economy SAL is no longer available so buying cheap Japanese stuff got that little bit more expensive.
3) Apart from the point 2 restriction above, most first world countries (USA, UK, etc) can still continue to trade parcels with Japan. The unlucky exceptions include Ireland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary, Belgium, Poland, etc.

These changes are already reflected in most of the Japanese sellers on eBay (that I've seen) as well as proxy/intermediary websites.

For specific details about your particular country, see the .pdf in the links above.

I put my CD buying on hold around a month ago because I figured something like this was coming. Though it looks like my country hasn't been effected.

Still, this list could change. The situation is changing every day.

Indeed it can. Indeed it can change worse.

The bad news continues. The newest updates to the restrictions are that several countries join the "heavily restriction of parcels" list: Australia (goddamnit, that's me), Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, amongst others. See link in first post for more details.

Temporary Suspension of International Mail to the United States

April 23, 2020

Due to a significant decrease in capacity due to further flight reductions and suspensions, it is no longer possible to send some international mail to the United States.

For the time being, starting Friday, April 24, we will temporarily suspend acceptance of the following international mail to the United States.

Types of mail to be temporarily suspended:
  • EMS
  • AIR
  • (*SAL has already been suspended)
The only remaining option is surface mail which can take months.

Japanese bidders must be ecstatic they no longer have to compete (for the most part) with foreigners. 50% price cut on Super Donkey Kong OSTs when?

Seems like some businesses got advance notice. I already had some of my packages returned to sender, so for the Americans that recently bought from Japan, expect the same.

Hopefully my country won't do the same (suspend parcels to USA). I just sold some VGM to a fellow vgmdber.

FedEx and DHL both still ship to the US, so those are options if you can use them and/or convince sellers to use them.

Good news: After more than a year of the stopping of EMS, it is expected that EMS shipments to USA (and maybe Oceania and Europe) will resume on June 1.

Bad news: There is now an EMS surcharge which range from about 20% for lighter items to almost 70% for heavier items.

If you're talking about the USA then small packets airmail has been available for a couple months now but only without registration/tracking.

Not according to this: https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...erview_en.html

And neither Zenmarket nor Buyee had that for me as an option.

If you click through to this page it shows more details: https://www.post.japanpost.jp/int/in...ew_usa_en.html

ZenMarket isn't allowing it yet but I've ordered stuff via airmail from CDJapan last month and got some via airmail from some eBay sellers. (I assume it was airmail because it only took ~3 weeks to ship.)
