Me and Another Soundscape spent some good time with Umemoto when he came to visit us last week. I wrote an interview/character study about him based on that time.

Umemoto's official account just announced he passed away on 17, August. Absolutely shocking... |

Oh no!
I heard from Another Soundscape a few months ago that he had fallen pretty ill. I had kind of been meaning to check up on him recently, but I never did. He was a pretty cool dude, wrote some awesome tunes and did a lot of production stuff for EGG MUSIC. I know he'll be missed by a lot of people. |

He was one of the nicest composers I met during my stay in Tokyo last year. I will truly miss him.

He's been sick for a long time, on and off. Last I heard (too long ago) he was suffering from severe bronchitis, high fever and more. I'm unsure what it was in the end and I don't want to speculate.

It's a terrible news, so young and talented... VGM people will never forget him.

As Another Soundscape would agree, he was one of the most wonderful and truly inspirational friends one could ever have. The last I spoke with him was on my birthday in a small email just to congratulate me.
I'm devestated and will miss him dearly. |

Incredibly saddening to see the end of the clearly fulfilling and rich life he led.

I love some of this man's works, particularly the Yu-No soundtrack. I shall give it a listen later in his honour.
Rest in peace, Ryu Umemoto. |

Wow... those are stunning news indeed. I was listening to some of his recent works, and couldn't shake off this strange feeling as if he was still alive.
Rest in peace. You and your music won't be forgotten. |

Very sad and unfortunate. For me he was one of the pioneers of PC98 game music. A few days ago when I saw this thread appear on top of the board I already felt something bad had happened.
His friend and colleague Hideki Higuchi made an entry in his blog http://tynwald.jp/news/index.php?eid=104 It seems one of Umemoto's last involvements was music production for the novel game Tenshi no Hane wo Fumanaide, released on July 29. I will miss him. |

I hadn't noticed the change for almost one year, but I made his death date back to August 16th, since that's how Egg Music announced it. 17th is the date that his Twitter (I heard it was posted by his brother) initially provided, but for some reasons it was deleted. We can say there is virtually only one hour difference between them, but as Egg Music specified the time, it seems to be more reliable.

Kind of redundant that the date of his passing is also on the notes when it's already visible right next to his name. I've taken the liberty of removing it and changing up the notes for more comprehensible reading.

Hard to believe it’s been nearly seven years. He was a great composer and it’s sad he died so young. I always suspected karoshi to be the cause of death. It's also interesting that he is descended from Takeda Shingen, who is the subject of a video game himself...and who has soundtracks from said games on this very website.
