Should we really have a separate entry for Hiroshi Miyauchi? It's simply Hiroshi Kawaguchi's name before he changed it when he became a Mukoyōshi.

I believe there are varying opinions on that among staff, but I'm personally okay with artist entries for pre-marriage names, since that's the only way to get that name to show up on albums in Japanese. If we were to link the main entry of Kawaguchi with the alias of "Hiroshi Miyauchi," it would show up as "Hiroshi Miyauchi" in English but 川口 博史 in Japanese, which I think kind of sucks.

I also like artist entries because you can associate related names. Like, if we were to dump all of Hiro's variations into one entry, the field would be:

Quote:
HIRO師匠
Hiro
H. Kawaguchi
Hiroshi Miyauchi
宮内博史
宮内博
ミヤウチヒロシ
The last four names are pretty much the same, but there's no way of indicating that because it's just a flat text list. Being able to group all of them in one entry has value to me.

This honestly sounds more like a bug that ought to be fixed than an argument for keeping separate non-aliased artists. Name changes due to marriage are not exactly uncommon.

Yeah, it has its own set of problems and is not ideal at all. With the system as-is I feel it's better than the alternative, but that's me.

Blah has plans to at some point restructure the artist system so there's only one artist entry per person and then identities under that, which should hopefully make that whole issue go away. (It'll also fix the thorniness that comes with alias artist entries being full artist entries and the whole variations field fiasco.)
