Added a complete English tracklist + some fixes. The incomplete English tracklist needs to be deleted.

For track 2-18, we kept the mispelling "A tense atmospehere" as it appears on the back cover.

Not sure if anybody really cares these days, but I've replaced the current translation with the official sound test, and added my own (same with the original OST).

The sound test is actually very accurate, except it carefully dodges the more ridiculous names (can't blame them, 1.14...)
Here is it, in case somebody prefers to delete it from the album entry.
Sound test, game style:
01. Out of chaos
02. In the beginning, there was light?
03. Black blinding nightmare
04. Ancient fantasies eternal
05. Eternal Hydrogen Anxieties
06. Evil Tales and Obligations
07. Blameless Thoughts
08. Ray of darkness, ray of light
09. Distortions in the void of despair
10. Hopeless Resolution
11. Hard Chain Reaction
12. Illuminating Magic Links
13. Reflections of trickery
14. Oblivion's Joy
15. Ending the spiral
16. Rise above the world
17. Unstable balance
18. Inscription on a tombstone
19. Clouds of spray
20. The name of his people is fear
21. Recurrent shudders
22. Delusional extremities
23. An illusion of the brain stem
24. All is twilight
25. Prosperity's compensation: an introduction
26. Soon we see shadow and light
27. In water, air and light
28. The road to glory and prosperity
29. When a person changes
30. Tomorrow
31. Weeping Lilies
32. Fighting the shadowy gods
33. The key to singing the praises of victory
34. Heads magic, tails curse
35. Negative roots
36. Fantasy and reality intermingled
37. Artifact
38. Eternal engine of linguistic massacre
39. Circulate on a wind up doll
40. Eternal spirits arise
41. Confidence in the domination
42. To the unhallowed ground
43. Valhalla
44. Epic poem to sacred death
45. Doorway to heaven
46. Requiem to a predicament
47. The counterfeit self
48. The crumbling Id
49. Through a thin haze
50. Emotional upset
51. Turn over a new leaf
52. Turn over a new leaf(rhythm ver.)
53. Behave irrationally
54. Vestigial dream
55. Systematic Enemy
56. Take a flight
57. Over there
58. A hollow heart
59. A tense atmosphere
60. A clash of personalities
61. A chamber of the heart
62. To the last drop of my blood
63. Jesting truth

The sound test uses some curious caps changes, but I believe I got it transcribed correctly.

This album supposedly is for the PSP version, but the US sound test is exactly the same in the PS1 and PSP versions.
The JP tracklist has 231 and 218 misspelled compared with the original OST, btw.

For the retranslation basically I used the sound test with some nitpicky tweaks for the less accurate tracks.

Translation Notes:
- First I standardised the caps usage for JP titles, since the sound test used them randomly.
- I also changed some minor words or phrasing here and there to be more literal. A bunch of them:

- The one that I thought and rethought the most is 1.14, 未確認神闘シンドローム. What a lovely, bizarre name. F'ing Hatsushiba or whoever named it. How to make sense of it? Let's see:
> 未確認=unidentified, unconfirmed something (ie.- UFO=未確認-飛行-物体, unidentified flying object).
> シンドローム=syndrome (signs), of something (ie.- メタボリックシンドローム/metabolic syndrome)
> 神闘 is the tricky part. Not a real word AFAIK but lit.- 'god/divine fight/battle' ("Fighting/Fighter God" would be more like 闘神 btw). You could take it as a as a whole or separatedly (though based on siimilarly named tracks here and on the sequels, which usually mix three words, I think it's meant to be as a whole).
I finally decided on "Unconfirmed God Fighting Syndrome", so it's ambiguous enough.
Guess you may read it as 'Unconfirmed-God Fighting-Syndrome' ("syndrome-of-fighting not-yet-confirmed/identified/accepted gods(your characters/enemies)") or Unconfirmed God-Fighting Syndrome ("not-yet-confirmed/classified syndrome of fighting-gods", maybe even "not-yet-confirmed/classified syndrome of fighting-like-a-god/divinely").
Or something (the Japanese don't seem to have an idea, either). If anybody has more theories...

- Other tracks.
103: technically the sound test is correct, but I wanted to match VP2's "1.02 To the Eternal Land".
106: I suspect this is written like classical JP so maybe it's wrong, but it looks like "becoming" to me.
110: More literal, same thing.
111: Actually I'm not sure if 'shadow and light visites (us)' or the other way around though.
116: map theme, I think 'doorway TO heaven' doesn't fit since you 'descend from heaven'.
118: "Distortions in the Abyss" too. 'Void of despair' seems too liberal.
126: this def. mentions 'devil/demon'.
128: 魔降臨連鎖概説, another ridiculous name. My take here is:
> 概説=outline, explanation
> 連鎖=chain, linkage, "cycle" (ie.- chain of life)
> 魔=evil/demon; 降臨=advent. "magic" is possible, but a 'magic advent' seems strange to me.
130: "彼の者" can be taken as "his people" as well. But I believe here it's like "彼の方", a respectuous way to say "he" (ie.- "His Name 'inspires' Fear"), which makes a lot more sense to me.
131: Another curious name. "光ありき" is "there was light" as in "God said 'let there be light' and there was light". Constructor here is a class constructor in programming. Maybe the implication is: programmers=god='made the light of the game'?
132: this 'goes to' (derives to) chaos, not 'comes from' (out of) it.
202: this is what reads to me, though the ST is enterely different. 急減至極生命力
> 急減=sudden, rapid decrease
> 至極=very, extremely (unsure if affect the previous or next word, it can be used both ways I think)
> 生命力=vitality, vital force
203: no actual 'ending something' here
206: 否定的な無意識下へ
>否定的=negative, opposed, contradictory
>無意識下=I'm not sure if that's a real word, but since 無意識=unconscious + 意識下=subconsciousness > 無意識下=unsubconsciousness. Coming from a company with games like "Infinite Undiscovery" I think it fits.
233: this seems like said by a character, hence the style change compared with the ST.
241: not too sure of this one actually.

This was pretty though, so if anybody wants to comment on the weirder tracks, by all means.
I'll spread it later if nobody minds.

(and btw-- p.09 of the original OST has none other than "Lizard Valeth", hahaha)

nobody ever thought the "nakunaru" from 1.10 could be the verb to die or synonyms?
I always thought it was the meaning behind that hiragana-written verb

I considered it, but I believe it's actually a grammar expression, in that "Aではなくなる" means "not A any more" (the key here is the 'noun + では').
I don't have a link right now but it's on my books.

Hmm, didn't notice this thread. A lot of the "curious caps changes" is just Sakuraba being himself; the Star Ocean Second tracks seem the same as they were. I'm not sure why they even bothered fixing anything for the sound test (see 2-38/39), because it looks silly with everything else in there.

Dag, can you explain to me how this, uh, "Engrish" sounds better than these translations? It's very scary.

The "curious caps" refers to translated tracks from the sound test, stuff like "Doorway to heaven" but then "Blameless Thoughts" Ie.- they weren't consistently translated with lower/uppercase.

Sakuraba doesn't name any tracks himself btw (Hiroya Hatsushiba did probably --paging Datschge), and the sound test was surely translated by Enix USA, not Tri-ace.

I certainly can't explain why the "Engrish" as you call it sounds better than the sound test, because it doesn't!
The point of the English retranslation is to let those that don't know JP see how some tracks were changed by Enix USA's translators.
Ie.- these "engrishy" tracks sound equally stupid in the original JP; and only sound nicer in the sound test because they didn't actually translate them.

But again, if what you guys prefer is a pristine page, by all means.

I didn't think anyone gets bothered by additional tracklists (as long as the original is still there).

Right, lots of his albums are like this; specifically, Star Ocean Second was like this. "The Climax of the tower"? It's a style, and it's one that Whoever Names These Tracks (Hiroya Hatsushiba, in this case? maybe not) prescribed for overseas releases, perhaps further corrected by Whoever Made That Sound Test (as they did with the Star Ocean tracks), and they just decided to leave the "curious caps" in as well as introduce new ones. For this, I think it could even be possible that these were the original names before the kanji came in, but with corrections.

I wasn't clear: I meant that the sound test (which I referred to as "Engrish" with quotes, because I can't spot any grammatical errors, but maybe I'm just terrible), sounds better than the translations (the actual translations from kanji)... and you've also gone and told me why I thought that.

Last note: I'd like to see (most of) the translations rendered in this sentence case that most of the album does; if you want to stick to the curious caps as well, that'd probably be best. Dunno, it just tends to look better when you do things like that. As long as the original writing from this album is still there ("The incarnation of devil" etc), it should be fine.

This is a good example of what I'm talking about. Personally, I'd like to see this sort of thing across VGMdb.

So I think it could be really great if we could make up our minds. I remember a discussion in the YsVI ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK about how the translated tracks should match the case of the original English tracks; in that case, all caps. Basically, everyone said to just translate in proper case. Yet in Denshi no Umi we're fine with translating to lowercase?

(btw I think it's dumb NOT to match the casing theme of the tracklist, we should keep those lowercased just like we should caps the YsVI translated tracks but let's at least make up our minds on consistency)

I do agree that keeping to the way the track list is already written, is a better method. Other than keeping it as "original" as possible, it also avoids having to figure which rules to follow for English capitalization, or which format someone may do, either capitalize certain words, sentence case, all first letters, etc.

I don't get it, this album is a reprint or a remaster?
because they say it's a perfect reprint but there is remaster edition written on the obi

if it's remastered so it's not a perfect reprint and vice versa

Definitely a remaster, the reverb and instrument balance is a lot closer to the PS1 version (like the Vagrant Story reprint)

Is there any sort of consensus regarding whether the original soundtrack release (FSCA-10118) or this one is better? I've heard that the original soundtrack had some track distortion issues on the second disc, but that's about it. I know that opinions are fairly divisive when it comes to the two releases of Vagrant Story's soundtrack (I think I lean more towards the original release myself,) but I haven't really heard anything when it comes to the two releases of Valkyrie Profile's soundtrack.

This is a silly question, but I nabbed a copy of this recently (I had the OG pressing years ago) - and the percussion just seems deeper and has more echo to me now? Am I just imagining that or did it always have that odd quality to it? It doesn't make it "bad" to me but I don't know if I'm just misremembering how the music sounded to me all those years ago.
