I have a bad feeling we'll be seeing his name on some porn game for the PC at some point.

Huh? Is there some announcement? Or maybe he's replacing Kikuta who's moving back into RPG territory for the time being

Already really missing this guy. With Ge-On-Dan shuttered, does anyone know what his plans are? From my point of view, it doesn't appear as if he is trying very hard to find a job (no website, twitter, e-mail, any other method of contact) so hopefully he hasn't retired.

Ah yeah, Nakano. There's something kinda special about this guy... I mean, he does this extremely repetitive stuff - many of his songs don't do too much. But, at the same time, that's what I like about them. It's like he's able to do something that, if other composers did it, it would be boring and repetitive... and yet, when he does it, it's cool and ambient. So when I say his stuff is repetitive, hopefully it doesn't sound like I'm bashing him, because I'm totally not. Stuff like Underwater Ruins and Hills of Jugon are just awesome, man (and yet seriously, how much do those songs actually do?).

I really miss Junya Nakano as well. He was one of Square's best and his absence is truly felt, especially now..
I still hope he'll make a comeback Freelancer style but like Raizen I'm not holding my breath :/

In my mind, Nakano hasn't really done anything big since Musashiden II back in 2005. There was The After Years last year, but I just didn't feel the magic there. I'd like to hear him come back big. I really loved his work in Dewprism.

Seems no one knows where he is or what he's doing, yet. Community, we need your email/twitter/google magic!

Bumping a two month old thread here. The guy is missed, even more so after his brilliant work on Musashiden II, which is truelly underrated. Seven years after it's release I can safely say this is Nakano at his peak.

Did anybody here hear Sidewinder V? The Sidewinder F rip was posted on STC a few years back. I tried googling it but all I got was an old thread littered with not-so-usefull comments (and a battle of Ongakusei vs Ongakusensei vs mysteryman...).

So people, is there no way to summon Nakano back or atleast get some insights?

I've been wanting to listen to the soundtrack to that for years but never found it so far.

Sorry guys, but Nakano/Square Sounds weren't the ones responsible for the music on Sidewinder V (and while the music could have been good without them of course, let me tell you right away, it's horrible. XD)
The composer for V is a certain David Morimoto..
Btw, while awesome, the Miker Sidewinder F rip on STC was half bad due to how 48khz tracks were downsampled. I've since reripped it proper and can prolly up it somewhere if anyone's interested.

I have two different rips of that at different pitches. Not sure which one of the two is accurate.

Well since he did F, it only made sense he'd do V as well ^^;

Sidewinder F is the only thing I'm missing from his discography. I should probably go digging around for it. I only tried very briefly once.

Newp, both rips are just the streams, one with titles like "st_01", the other with titles like "SEQPCM01" (neither are particularly helpful.) Got the PSF rip with the rest of the tracks separately, also untagged/timed. Hooray.

Most don't know this, but Nakano's last compositional roles at SQEX were actually the scores for the Fullmetal Alchemist adaptations Prince of the Dawn and Daughter of the Dusk.

Ha, you can even hear it in this poor quality trailer. Definitely Nakano.

He's a frustrating composer to me. I think his style is unique and could produce great results, but I don't think he tries enough on melodies or development beyond small variations on the thing he's been repeating throughout the entire track up to that point. "Enemy Attack" from FFX is a good example of one that I could say is totally solid if he had just made 30 seconds more that was somewhat different than the rest. DewPrism is easily his best work to my ears and his only consistently good soundtrack. Wonder if these FullMetal Alchemist games gave him a chance to grow, since there's some more melodic stuff in that trailer alone and other videos show more music less typical of him. Is he the sole composer?

Yeah he has a minimalist kinda style. Many songs are very intricate but with only small changes introduced gradually. I think it's what makes him stick out to be honest. It's nice to hear game musicians indulging in a little artistic license in that way.

The music in that trailer's great too.

There's one track from Dewprism that is entirely based on two elements at a very slow cross-rhythm, that go out of sync and come back into sync over the course of several minutes.

Nakano does a lot of subtle things with harmony and timbre that may not stick out at first, but make the music enjoyable to listen to either attentively or inattentively, just like the way Brian Eno (who helped invent the genre) described ambient music.

I love the sample from Game Music Prayer. Going to have to grab that iTunes single as well.

Thanks Zanasea! This is great news.

Randomly decided to check up on Nakano. Turns out he just released a new album titled "Phantasm" a couple of days ago! Only listened to the first 3 tracks, but it sounds great so far.

Also, he has an official website: http://waveskey.com/junya/

Also, he & TECHNOuchi commented on one of Blitz's MIDI transcriptions via Twitter, heh.

I see many of the songs have their own release. Is it worth adding each one to VGMdb?

It's wonderful, exactly what I expected from Nakano. I wonder what the future holds for him?
