VGMDB's Guide To VGM (Currently taking submissions for Electronic Styles 1.0-1.10)
Currently taking Electronic styles 1-1.10. Please recommend tracks for each one that you personally own. Thank you.
http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/ As you can see, vgm is under one puny section (techno->vgm). I am curious if we at vgmdb could create a guide where we have samples from various different genres in all vgm (with history) and perhaps a gear section (snes soundchip, NES PC-88 soundchip, etc). I know that to undertake such a thing would require multiple inputs from the community. So, I am starting this thread to get a feel on what the thoughts on such a creation are. edited-- to reflect what I meant. Here is the big bad list of genres I'd like to get filled out with at least 3 samples from vgm each. VGM is a medium, not a genre. So a guide would pretty much extend an existing genre guide with examples from games.

I updated the first post to get rid of that. And yea, I want to see how many different styles and genres we could fill up with examples from vgm. Perhaps with a description of who was the first person to put acid techno or rap into vgm and etcetera.

This is more a subject for research than a database site BUT there's not a doubt in my mind there's a lot of knowledge here. Something that I (as a musicologist and game music enthusiast) would appreciate is a forum dedicated to game music research and similar. A place where you can ask for information, old interviews and share/absorb the general knowledge of this almost ridiculously information rich community.

I am bumping this thread. Anyone else have problems classifying certain vgm (like Axelay's soundtrack) in discogs?
edit: I have added the list of genres & styles that I want to fillout with vgm.

I would definitely find this to be cool.
But how exactly would I help contribute? Would simply knowing what songs would fit certain genres be enough? |

The answer to your second question is yes. I am talking to SecretSquirrel right now about this project. He would have to edit the title of the thread every week or so to reflect what part we are working on (i.e. this week we taking submissions for Electronic styles 1.1-1.10). People would have to upload an mp3 for their submission. Still deciding on file size for the mp3s.
