NFO files
Just for my own edification, what's the advantage of including an NFO file with an album release, as opposed to a TXT? Thanks!

It's traditional.
I hope there are no plans to shift VGMDb towards the pirate circles? |

I've always thought this was a bit... "annoying", of a tradition to say the least. Makes you do extra steps to open the file and/or additional software.
TXT is much more universal. </nitpick> |

Don't worry, it's not going to happen. I've been deleting posts that delve into that.

Yeah, just wondering what the big deal about those types of files was. Wasn't sure if there was some sort of actual value added vs. TXT, but as far as the answers seem to be, no.

i am agree, .nfo files denote warez or cracks files. (since it was invented by crackerz).
These days, biggest usage comes from the demoscene i'd say. It is still used nowadays and i don't know why.. it's just a "tradition", a signature for release groups. But i am pretty sure it have no advantage on .txt files. Maybe the file size? But that's a pretty poor argument. Last edited by Myrkul; Mar 12, 2009 at 01:22 AM. |

There's no difference, it's just renaming the extension of a regular text file to nfo. The only advantage is that there are .nfo viewers which helps to display ASCII art properly (which is like renaming readme.txt to readme.arial so you could use a special program to display it with the Arial font).
