Default Samples used in anime/game music

In recent years, I've become interested in the production process of older video game music. And, as some of you may know, in the 90s and early 00s, the use of sample libraries was very common. So, I've started collecting sample libraries, and have managed to find some samples that I recognize. I'll try to document whatever I find in this thread, and welcome you guys to contribute as well, if you find something.

Contributing

Guidelines:
As there is already a huge thread on samples used by Akira Yamaoka at Silent Hill Heaven, I will not list anything used by him here, nor should you. It would take forever to put together all the stuff they've already found over there. If you find something (currently unknown to them) that was used by him, please post about it in that thread instead.

If you want to contribute to this thread, please use the following syntax (click the Quote button on this post to see the BB Code used):

Game / Anime
  • "sample name" [(additional information)] from "publisher: sample library" was used in [disc number.][track number] ["track title"] [(time)] [(notes)] [;...]
  • [...]

Notes
  • Fields enclosed in square brackets ([]) are optional.
  • Track titles, numbers, etc. should be from the first official master soundtrack release (if there is one) unless otherwise noted.
  • A timestamp should only be added if the sample only appears once or twice.

Resources

Resources:
Before you contribute, it may be wise to do a little research, to make sure that it's actually a logical conclusion. A track made in 1997 couldn't possibly contain a sample from a library released in 2010, right?

Below are some places that may be helpful to find the information you need. The websites are pretty good references. You may discover some libraries that are quite rare now.

Websites

Data (and metadata)
  • Text documents and other files (CD-ROM libraries)
  • File modification timestamps
  • Binary (meta)data
Case in point: Sonic Foundry (now Sony) has re-issued a lot of sample libraries from many different publishers. Most (all?) CDs still has the original copyright notice intact within the WAV metadata, but you may need special tools to view this information (foobar2000, for example, doesn't show the data anywhere). I usually check with a hex editor to be really sure (the information is usually stored near the end of the files).

Composer Gear

Gear Lists:
This isn't necessarily relevant to this thread, but over the years, I've also assembled lists of gear that composers are known to have possessed at some point in their career. This won't include any guess work; only what has been confirmed from pictures, interviews, etc. If you want to add to this list, please provide a proper source of information.

Unfortunately I don't know the sources, but a large amount of the Growlanser 2 and 3 soundtracks are based on library samples.

Also, most voice samples heard in Mitsuda's music are from libraries.

I think this is a great idea Nisto, and I'm glad you're putting the effort into documenting these samples!

Oh okay, I'll keep that in mind. I actually recently heard those two soundtracks for the first time, too.

Speaking of Mitsuda: I just updated the first post with another one he used in Chrono Cross. I thought this sample was (also) from Devil May Cry 2, but ah.. maybe I was wrong.

Thanks, I'm glad someone thinks good of this little project!

Thanks for doing this. I'm intrigued to find out what libraries professional composers use. Keep up the great work!

I'm not sure if they're samples, just a common lyrics, or what, but sometimes I hear the same phrase in songs, and it's always on a different soundtrack by a different composer, so it's not like it's just a theme of the game or something. Here are some examples:

Soul Poetry from Baten Kaitos (0:43 seconds in) and Bard from Sonic Dive (at the very beginning). It seems so much like it's a sample, because Bard also contains another lyric that's exactly like one in another song by another composer (which itself is a sample). At 0:27 seconds in, it contains something also heard in Nephilim from Xenosaga II (partially at the beginning and fully the next time 0:06 seconds in).

There's also The Idol of Time and Space from Devil May Cry (at the very beginning) and A Time of Calming ~ The Sea's Roar from Suikoden Celtic Collection 2 (0:16 seconds in). This is the same lyric, right? But it's so different, I don't think it's a sample. It's just strange to hear the same exact thing come up in two totally different songs, especially because the DMC track isn't very Celtic at all.

What do you think of these things, Nisto? You seem to be the sample expert!

Ah, that Xenosaga II sample sounds so familiar! I must've heard it in just about every media by now.. TV shows, movies, games and probably even anime (which I watch very little of). I'll try to remember it.

The Baten Kaitos/Sonic Dive sample is something I haven't heard anywhere else, but I'll try to remember this as well!

It's been a while since I've heard the first Devil May Cry soundtrack, and I have never heard Suikoden Celtic Collection 2, so I don't know what it sounds like.

Well, you can easily listen to the samples on Youtube, if you're curious. And yeah, I'm sure I've heard the Nephilim piece in even more things than I'm listing here, those were the two that just came to mind that shared that phrase.

Yeah, okay, I see which one that is. I haven't found that sample though. I'll have to ask around for these!

EDIT: And yeah, I'm pretty sure it's the same sample. It was probably filtered with a DAW to sound.. less "dramatic" I guess? Even if it isn't, I'm quite sure you'd find it in the same library.

Good ol' "causing much mayhem, dropping drama" probably needs no presentation.

I'm afraid I don't know which libraries, but some stuff to watch for:

Some of Meguro stuff, like the French vocals in Persona 3's "201 Changing Season".
I'm under the impression much of Masafumi Takada's output comes from libraries, but I can't think of exact examples.
Toshikazu Tanaka loves his canned voices too.

This is more of a question but I swear I've heard NieR's "2.01 The Dark Colossus Destroys All" chorus somewhere else, anybody knows? (classic?)

Not sure if this falls into the category "Sounds similar to one another" or "sample," but given how exact these intros sound to one another, I'm leaning more towards the latter:

Ah, I knew I'd heard the Baten Kaitos one somewhere else before, and I found it.

Soul Poetry from Baten Kaitos (0:43 seconds in) is also heard in The Attackers from High School of the Dead (at the very beginning). It's altered but it's the same thing essentially. EDIT: Oh, we have it as "Assailing Ones", same difference, it's track 4.

Didn't think I'd find it so soon, but the voice sample(s) from the Sonic Dive track comes from Spectrasonics "Symphony of Voices". Actually, most, if not all voice samples from the track is in the volume "BOY PHRAS" on disc 3.

The first voice sample on the Xenosaga II track is also from that same volume. I bet I'll find some more from the sample library used in the Xenosaga II track (there's 5 discs..). Will update the first post later today.

EDIT: Found one sample from Koudelka as well (took me like two hours to figure out where I heard it, but yeah!)

EDIT 2: Please, if you post track titles, use the titles as printed on the covers!

Okay, here are my latest finds:

Baten Kaitos
  • "AGNUS BOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 1.04 "Soul poetry"

Biohazard 0 (Resident Evil 0)
  • "CLUSTER 01" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 5.68 "END-ROLL" (track number and title from the box) (2:05)

Highschool of the Dead
  • "AGNUS BOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 04 "襲ってくる奴ら"
  • "AGNUS BOY2" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 04 "襲ってくる奴ら"

Koudelka
Sonic Dive
  • "AGNUS BOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "ALLELUBOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "ALLELUBOY3" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "ALLELUBOY4" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "ALLELUBOY5" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "LULU BOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "LULU BOY2" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"
  • "LULU BOY4" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 02 "Bard"

Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse
  • "LULU BOY1" from "Spectrasonics: Symphony of Voices" was used in 2.15 "Nephilim"

Obviously Spectrasonics seems favored by many.. even for me. Their "Bizarre Guitar" library is just stunning. It's essential if you like the guitar, and ambient music. Even if you're not making music, some of the samples are long enough to fully enjoy.

Yeah, I saw Spectrasonics a lot in the first list you compiled, and now even more... I need to check out Symphony of Voices, because I love Bard to death.

How about all those notorious canned rap samples used by Daisuke Achiwa, Shoji Meguro and Motoi Sakuraba, among others?
Edit: Great topic btw. keep it up.
Edit2: Some of the more obvious pieces: Audhumla (Ar Tonelico), Iwatodai Dorm (Persona 3), Bitter Dance (Star Ocean 3), Chaotic Dance (Baten Kaitos), Chaotic Dance 2 (Baten Kaitos II), Shudder (Einhänder) etc. etc.

There is a lot of rap samples on Best Service's "Hallelujah" library. But I'm not too familiar with either of those composer's works (i.e. I can't think/don't know of any songs they've made that has rap samples). Razakin wondered about rap samples as well though. I can try checking with him on what's in the library.

Edit: Razakin mentioned Star Ocean 3 specifically as well, when he linked me a couple of songs with rap samples. I actually found all of the rap samples from Bitter Dance in the Hallelujah library (huge list below):

Spoiler:

Star Ocean Till the End of Time
  • "RAPHRASE01" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE03" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE04" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE05" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE07" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE08" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE10" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE25" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE26" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE27" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE28" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)
  • "RAPHRASE29" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 2.04 "Bitter Dance" (vol. 2)

One of Miki Higashino's tracks on Moonlit Shadow too, I seem to recall.

Well, as long as the thread is still bumped, I guess I may as well post what I've (surprisingly quickly) found since my last post.

Spoiler:

Biohazard 0 (Resident Evil 0)
  • "PSYCHO AB" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 5.12 "LEECHMAN-1" (track number and title from the box)
  • "SUSP#6 AF" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 5.12 "LEECHMAN-1" (track number and title from the box)
  • "WILD FREAE" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 5.12 "LEECHMAN-1" (track number and title from the box)
  • "FILMFX2 AI" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 5.58 "D‧A‧L‧I" (track number and title from the box)
  • "BAD GUYSAD" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 5.58 "D‧A‧L‧I" (track number and title from the box)

Final Fantasy X-2
  • "FILMFX1 AE" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 2.02 "大いなる存在"
  • "PREDATO AJ" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 2.15 "混乱"
  • "FILMFX3 AB" from "East West: Symphonic Adventures" was used in 2.21 "アカギ隊"

Heroes of Might and Magic III
  • "Drum Ensemble 139" (CDDA version; first sample) from "Zero-G: Ethnic Flavours" was used in "Combat02"
  • "Drum Ensemble 139" (CDDA version; third sample) from "Zero-G: Ethnic Flavours" was used in "Combat02"

I'm also fairly certain that one of the Gamelan samples from "PowerFX: New World Order 2" was used in "Nitro Mantra" from "Ridge Racer 6", but I can't figure out which, it's so subtle, and it's probably only partial use of one sample.

I didn't check out the tracks in Datschge's post until today, but all I found were the samples from the Persona 3 track. The others have rap samples from different person(s) and library/ies.

Spoiler:
Persona 3
  • "RAPHRASE01" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE02" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE04" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE05" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE07" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE08" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"
  • "RAPHRASE09" from "Best Service: Hallelujah" was used in 1.13 "Iwatodai Dorm"

If we're going to talk about rap stuff, Capcom vs. SNK 2 has some in Stimulation. There are also some vocals in This Is True Love Makin'. Perhaps you've heard those.

Nope, haven't heard em. Vocal samples aren't exactly one of my top priorities. So far, the rap samples from the "Hallelujah" library are the only rap samples I know I have...

Anyhoo, I found a couple of samples from Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Zelda: Majora's Mask!

Spoiler:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • "African 04 104-1" from "Zero-G: Ethnic Flavours" was used in 67 "Shadow Temple"

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • "African 13 111-A" from "Zero-G: Ethnic Flavours" was used in 1.51 "ウッドフォールの神殿"

(There is a bunch of samples from the "Indian" section on "Ethnic Flavours" that reminds me of クスリ屋 from Wind Waker, so it's possible Koji Kondo took something from this library for Wind Waker as well, but I'm not sure.. many of the samples are so alike).

The Ethnic Flavours section on the first DVD of World Pack (which is what I assume you have) is just a selection from the original library (which is now (near-)impossible to find). Check the second DVD for "Bonus Loops From ProPack" for another directory of samples from it - that's where I found those.

Edit: And of course, thanks for that find on RE 0. That's actually a cool find. I think I have yet to fully dig through the first Distorted Reality library..

Ok what songs do those play in and at what time? Also why do you have the names in Japanese? They release the OSTs in NA in English you know.

The Ocarina of Time sample plays already by 0:07 - partly, but at 0:11 you hear the full drum sample.

As for the Majora's Mask one:
I actually posted about the sample on Zeldauniverse already, but since their database crashed only a day after I posted it, the post is now gone. So I guess you didn't see it. Luckily Google cached the post just in time. Check it out.

I use the original titles (often Japanese) to avoid any confusions. Most of the times there is only one tracklist on a soundtrack release. Also, I'm used to listening to the Japanese release of Majora's Mask since I own it, so I naturally took the titles from that release and not the NA release. I don't like using (unofficially) translated titles (if they even exist), because many times there are more than one translation of a track around places, or people attempt to translate it themselves, and as such, it may lead to confusion (like the Highschool of the Dead track that Mortavia posted about above).

But I could start adding alternative titles (i.e. official ones) if that makes things easier? With Ocarina of Time I did in fact use the NA title, because there are actually two sets of tracklists on the soundtrack release.

Okay. Yeah. I had to use google cached to get my posted sample back.

Also I dont have African 13 111-A in Ethnic Flavors. This is strange. Maybe they renamed them in World Pack... hmm. Could you possible upload those samples to soundcloud maybe? Im very curious about them especially the woodfall vocals.
