My perspective is this: it's a Pokemon game. If you've enjoyed other Pokemon games in the past, there's no particular reason why you wouldn't like this one, simply because the core gameplay that makes Pokemon so compelling is still there. Comparing it to other Pokemon games (free roms), I find it pretty hard to place, but it would probably fall somewhere in the middle. What it does well, it does REALLY well; the gym battle presentation is spectacular, the new Pokemon are my favourite set in a while, the Wild Area feels like a big step for the series, and the QOL improvements are top-notch. That's marred a bit by the game's shortcomings, some of which are just baffling Game Freak things like the removal of the Exp. Share toggle and the GTS, others of which are clearly the result of the developers being rushed and having to meet a deadline--the game's level design and presentation takes a nosedive in the last stretch, and it's pretty blatant that they were just trying to get it out the door for the release date. There's a lot to like, but it's definitely lacking in polish in some key ways.
