I know she has a lot of fans, and I've heard a good deal of Yoko Kanno score in various anime, but I've never noticed any consistent personality in her music. Usually, after I've heard enough of someone's work, I can hear similar stylistic traits throughout, from a specific kind of arrangement to a melodic quirk, although I know that there are people out there with more musical training and a better ear, so to speak.

I don't want anyone to take this the wrong way, but I'm wondering if anyone here can point to personal musical traits in her work. Give examples and such.

Kanno writes simple melodies, but uses a lot of extended/jazzy chords regardless of the genre she writes in. She likes to combine acoustic sounds and ethnic instruments with electronic elements or synthesizers, even in her old 80s and 90s stuff. She borrows a lot from composers like Vangelis, Danny Elfman, and John Williams.

Her soundtracks also have lots of vocal themes and she likes to work with vocalists from other countries. Sometimes she herself sings on tracks, usually in a made up language, and always credited as "Gabriela Robin".

Okay, so what's up with the confusion about her birth date?

VGMdb: March 19, 1964
JP Wiki: May 19, 1967
EN Wiki: March 19, 1967
ANN: May 19, 1964
IMdb: March 19, 1964
AniDB: March 18, 1964
Anison: May 19, 1967

The only one that has a source is JP Wiki which cites a 4gamer article from 2007.

Edit: I am switching to the cited date for now. Though this should probably be looked into.

Edit2: I've dug into this thing a bit more. So the March 18, 1964 date that we had here before originally came from JP wiki. It's only somewhat recently that it was changed to May 19, 1967. First, I found that her birth date is, in fact, March 18th, despite most sites listing the 19th. This bit of info comes from the official website of TETSU100%, a band which Kanno has been a part of for over a decade. The site doesn't list her birth year but does have info that you can't find elsewhere like her blood type and picture of her signature. The real issue here is her birth year which I could not find a definitive source for. I have left it blank. Feel free to research it if you like.

This is a just my speculation, but I guess her birth year would be in 64. My reasoning for that is, most composers general don't have big official releases until middle to later 20's. There is rarely anyone in the industry, at least till now with Tomoki Miyoshi whom have had prolific careers in their teens. Nagaoka was born in 61 and the earliest album I have on record from him is 1988. I know his site states he his earliest work was in 85. So Kanno born in 1964 seems more likely with her first major work being at age 24.

According to an editor at JP wiki, the Oct 2013 issue of Aera Magazine (published by Asahi Shimbun) had a profile on Kanno which said "Born 1963 in Miyagi Prefecture" (just the year, no day). He also notes that in the 1974 Yamaha Junior Concert, which she participated in as a child, that Kanno was 11 years-old at the time. These sources seem much more reliable than the other ones, so I'm setting her birth year to 1963.

Edit: For anyone wondering about Kanno being linked to Gabriela Robin, I was able to officially confirm it through copyright listings. Kanno is the sole rights-holder on songs where Robin wrote the lyrics.

Her latest work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbzc96RUPD8

It's been crazy to see Kanno's rise in fame over the last decade. In 2009 she was composing for anime and now she's performing her music for the Emperor of Japan.

The emporer probably requested her to perform himself. A good leader should keep an ear for his peoples works. Maybe she can compose the next version of the national anthem.

From my experience living in Japan quite a few people here know her by name. I always enjoy pointing out to them that she was originally a game composer

I visited Japan in 2015 for the Fire Emblem 25th concert. I was sharing with the locals about people in their own country, but it seems that the Japanese digest Japanese art the least.

I dunno about that. Could just be that whoever you were talking to isn't into subculture. There's plenty of mainstream Japanese culture that isn't really known to the outside. Lots of comedians and talk show personalities and live action movies and TV dramas.

Default Say Hello! Anoko ni Yoroshiku (2007)

I'm curious as to why Say Hello! is missing, given that other non-fiction soundtracks are present (e.g. CM Yoko)

It appears this was some kind documentary based on a book, released on DVD in 2006.07.14 (I'm unclear whether it was originally broadcast), according to cdjapan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/BVB4-31082). Allmusic has the OST listed as released 2007.04.11 https://www.allmusic.com/album/relea...u-mr0003283491. It's quite a nice OST too; seems a shame to omit it merely on the grounds it's a documentary!

01. Say Hello!
02. Clarity
03. Play Play Play
04. Ticklish Pleasure
05. Yume no Komoriuta
06. Motion In a Minute
07. Sanko
08. Lucy In the Room
