Default Super Monkey Ball 2 composer credits from JASRAC

I've been sitting on this information for quite a while because a lot of it is indefinite stuff that we can't really do much with, but after talking about the soundtrack with a friend and revisiting these credits, I decided that it's worth getting the list out publicly.

It turns out that most of the music from Super Monkey Ball 2 is registered with Japan's copyright collection agency JASRAC, even though there was no soundtrack release. So we have a huge amount of official track titles and specific composer information, with the enormous caveat that we'll never have official confirmation for what music in the game they refer to, because there's no album or sound test to cross-reference with!

There's also the problem that the number of registered songs is quite a bit smaller than what's actually in the game (110 vs. 155* in the rip I have), so what JASRAC has is far from a complete breakdown. It does appear that most/all of what's missing are just minigame jingles, but there's no guarantee that more "major" music like stage themes aren't missing from the breakdown too.

* It's actually 111 in the rip, but each cutscene is composed of a few different cues which are registered individually on JASRAC, while the rip combines them into one song per cutscene. Splitting them apart gives 155.

So here's the list of music along with the composer, sorted in order of JASRAC production code. Be very careful with inferring too much from the song order here, because it doesn't necessarily imply anything. There is some grouping of similar tracks in the ordering, but also some randomness, like how Haruyoshi Tomita's six songs appear in the block of Shoji's cutscene music for some reason.

Based on some definite tracks for Shoji and Iuchi (worlds 2/3 for Shoji, worlds 4/5/7 and some minigame music for Iuchi), I think it's pretty easy to tell the difference between them in a lot of cases; Iuchi's progressions tend to be a bit simpler and even just shorter than Shoji's, and Shoji does a lot more beat manipulation while Iuchi tends to just use breakbeat loops right out of the box. You can even hear the same loop in World 8 and Expert Shot haha, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more.

Small War in the BBHD OST is the Monkey Fight theme from the first Super Monkey Ball so we can probably assume it's the name of the Monkey Fight 2 theme aswell

Stumbled on Ryoji Iuchi's Youtube Channel recently, turns out just created a playlist called "my works: Super Monkey Ball 2". In it includes:

Quote:
World 4 - Inside the Whale
World 5 - Amusement Park
World 7 - Bubbly Washing Machine
World 8 - Clock Tower
Monkey Race 2 Advanced Track
Monkey Race 2 Beginner Track
Monkey Race 2 Expert Track
Monkey Target 2
Monkey Golf 2
Title Screen
Monkey Boat - Expert Course
Monkey Boat - Advanced Course
Monkey Shot - Expert Stage
Monkey Shot - Advanced Stage
Monkey Shot - Beginner Stage
Of course, that's a 100% match with above minus a few extras (maybe he was picking favorites, or just ones he could find). Just thought it would be worth noting! I updated his page with his YouTube channel which has been fairly active recently. He has playlists of his works from a bunch of other games too, though I'm not sure which of these are newly confirmed.

Ah, very cool! Monkey Target 2 is an interesting new confirmation, I wonder if that's the mysterious "1/F" in the JASRAC list

Yep! Updated the first post

"エイエイプ~ JAZZ ARRANGE" on that album is the Monkey Billiards 2 BGM, so I guess that song isn't one of the unidentified tunes in the JASRAC list

I noticed a possible error with the Classic Soundtrack (not that there's a shortage of those). The SMALL WAR on there is the Monkey Fight theme from SMB1, just like on BBHD's OST. However, on the regular soundtrack, SMALL WAR 2021 is a remix of the Dogfight theme from SMB2.

Considering SMALL WAR being registered with all the other SMB2 music, I think both Monkey Fight from SMB and Dogfight from SMB2 are called SMALL WAR, but whoever compiled the Classic Soundtrack was only told to add SMALL WAR, so added the wrong track with the same name. I haven't played the game, so don't know if Dogfight in there also uses the wrong SMALL WAR.

Also if I may add to the speculation, might the DESCENT CHORD MUSICs be the ending theme? Since there's both a short and long version of that.
