If it's a different item in a different territory (i.e. not Japan), then it should probably have its own entry.

Since Teresa Waltz (disc 1 track 15) is named Waltz of the Boss and Teresa Race (disc 2 track 38) is named Boo Race also uses the word Teresa, shouldn't there be a consensus on either being Boos or Boss?
I changed them to both be Boo, and fixed one other track name. Last edited by Fearin; Dec 5, 2009 at 01:53 AM. |

Are we missing scans for the actual cover, or are there just alternate covers for this release? I searched the Japanese characters of this soundtrack's name and came up with this.
http://ekizo.mandarake.co.jp/shpimg/00/00/669/669.jpg It's a dark cover, and it says "x2 Platinum Version" instead of "Super Mario Galaxy" on it. Actually, I only see one result in the platinum version search that matches the cover we have now, with the "Super Mario Galaxy" label. |

If I remember correctly, Super Mario Galaxy Platinum had a foil card in front of the booklet. I believe that's what is pictured in your link. It looks dark because of the light reflecting off the foil finish. Behind the card was a regular booklet which is what is pictured on VGMdb. I looks like there isn't a scan of the foil card in the database at the moment.
I suppose I should check my copy to make sure I'm remembering correctly. XD |

I've added a new entry for the Nintendo of Europe release. It would be cool if someone with the album could upload a front scan.
By the way, some of the Nintendo of Europe tracklist should be used to correct some of the fan translations of the Japanese tracklist. |

It looks like we need to rethink the submission policy for tracklists.
Maybe, once certain conditions are met, a tracklist should be frozen, after which only staff/trusted (or alternatively just staff) will be able to edit it. If someone wants to pose a correction, they would have to post in the discussion thread and defend their change. By the way, what's the lineage of track names like "Koopa Jr. Appearance"? I've posted before that this translation is ambiguous because of a double meaning of the word "appearance" in English. "Koopa Jr. Appears" would be better, unless this track really is about what Koopa Jr. looks like (or alternatively his official visitation as a guest at an event or live broadcast). |

I changed the track list back to Prime Blue's since it supposedly comes directly off the disc and so is official as it ever gets. I should have copied and pasted into this forum what was there before as backup just in case there was a misunderstanding. I'll do that in the future.
However, reading the thread, I'm confused about what was meant when it comes to "appears" being used instead of "appearance". Prime Blue, did you modify the track list in anyway just to be more grammatically precise? |

Koopa Jr.'s Appearance = What Koopa Jr. looks like. It can also mean that he arrives or shows up, but that's a secondary definition, and not what I think first when I see that.
Koopa Jr. Appears = Koopa Jr. arrives or shows up. No abmiguity here. Enter Koopa Jr. = I think the best translation is this, which uses stage directions. However, not everyone is familiar with those, and it also has some ambiguity. |

I understand that, but I would like to use the official translations directly from Nintendo. I'd assume that would be what most people would want, but if not I'd at least be happy with the exact ones from Nintendo appearing in a post in this forum.
Prime Blue referred to them as romanizations, but what he gave was in English, so I don't think that's technically correct. Prime Blue, what was actually on the disc? And by from the disc, do you mean CD-Text? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Japanese Last edited by VideoGameScrapBook; May 25, 2010 at 03:34 AM. |

In case they would be missed by some, here are kyubihanyou's edits for Disc 1. I don't know of an easy way to retrieve the old ones for Disc 2:

あらわる = verb = appears 出現 = noun = appearance 登場 = noun = entry/enter --> Duo Entry/Enter Duo --> Rockman 8 OST; also, Samus Entry Fanfare Proof of its application: Ocarina of Time OST - Enter Ganondorf = ガノンドロフ登場 The reason I didn't put entry or enter before was because I was seeing a consistent use of appears and appearance and I was respecting that. While on the subject, here's another interpretation of similar words 戦 = fight (in general) ---> Duo Fight --> Rockman 8 OST Reference: Bleach 125 English dub (makes more since in that context than battle) 戦い = fight (with others) --> Pokemon Red/Green OST なかまたちとのたたかい = fight against comrades (more sense than battle against comrades, since it wasn't a real all-out battle) (たたかい = 戦い) --> Kirby 64 OST 戦闘 = battle (More complex; if nothing else, combat) ボス戦闘曲1 = Boss Battle Tune/Song 1 --> Dairantou Smash Bros. X Again, I was respecting the use of battle more than fight And then: 最後 = Last 最終 = Final Last edited by kyubihanyou; Jun 1, 2010 at 07:02 AM. |

1-03: Raid is a better translation than just attack. 1-09: Based on this video, it's Honeybee, not Honey Bee http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmJSX1QuVas 1-19: Nemesis Great King Koopa goes without saying 1-22: Should be "the Great King Star" and not "the Great King's Star" based on symbols used. の can still mean "of", like the Battle of Gettysburg. Just add Decisive in, really 1-23: Dawn ~A New Morning~ = best translation in my opinion. 夜明け = Dawn, and 朝 = Morning 2-04: Imprisoned = Better translation and descriptor than "Captured" Also, this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmJSX1QuVas 2-06: Why shorten Astronomy to Astro? 2-11: Works either way 2-13: 探検 = Expedition; 隊 at end = Party 2-16: I had Space Fantasy before Space Illusion. Europe hit it on the nose. 2-19: Same word as 2-16. Space over Cosmos 2-22: Whatever the game data says it is. 2-24: Should be "Fight to the Death" if it does translate that way. 2-25, 2-26, 2-49, 2-52: Unnecessary "The", I think. 2-27: If Ball Roll is what Tamakoro translates into, then yes 2-28: Guess it's a Library if that's what the game data says it is. 2-44: Steel Demon King Mecha Koopa Again, goes without saying |

Thanks kyubihanyou and Prime Blue for the explanations of your choices. I went back and combined the two.
Whenever there was ambiguity in a translation, the priority was to match the English used in the files on the disc, assuming they were referring to the same thing. Prime Blue's use of Cosmos however is taken from what seems to be the original name for Wind Garden. It appears nowhere else though and Space actually is part of another filename. So I went with the official European name to settle the dispute. I decided on Prime Blue's "Attack!" instead of kyubihanyou's "Raid!" for several reasons: the former is more easily understood to be a battle cry by English speakers, Nintendo of Europe went with that word, and attack is used in many cases for the filenames on the disc whereas raid is never used. "Astronomy Dome" instead of "Astro Dome": Prime Blue used Astro because of "AstroDome..." used for filenames on the disc. What should be considered though is that these names are often shortened, so the more typical translation should be given priority. "Mechanical Koopa, Steel Demon King": The filenaming refers to that creature as MechanicKoopa. Again, it was probably due to shortening, and if they wanted it to be mecha-koopa, they wouldn't have bothered to add the 'nic'. I really like the whole stage direction idea of "Enter", but the ambiguity, general unfamiliarity, and translation trend were good enough reasons to go with "Appears". Here's the most recent version as backup in case it is changed later. Prime Blue and kyubihanyou's separate translations can also be found earlier in these forums for those who are interested. Code:

The term "demon" also isn't as taboo in Japan as the U.S. I mean, just look at Hell Prominence [Galaxy]. I respect your attempt to use the game's data [it helped in two or three variations], but I consider the OST as the standard for track names, and this entry is for the OST, not a gamerip. On that note, there are other tracks that are not 100% the same as the game (i.e. Star Dust Road, Water and Snow Mountain [SM64 OST], etc.), so why can't this one? There's also a pretty well-established standard for the term's use. http://dragonball.wikia.com/wiki/King_Piccolo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trXYPb-ggw4 at 0:34 Last edited by kyubihanyou; Jun 14, 2010 at 01:08 PM. |

I may have come a little late in this thread, but I have to ask something. Well, I know that very literal translations are looked down upon (even if for no other reason than the fact that some things don't have the same meaning when said that exact way in a different language), but are we seriously transforming kana now? I mean I'm all for taking the meaning of a kanji and saying "okay, they were trying to say this", but taking a kana and changing it is like... practically taking English and changing it.
メカ is "meka". Which is really "mecha". Are we serious with "mechanical"? The important part is that with kana, they could have said that if they wanted to. And I know this isn't an official localization, because even the official localization is Mecha Bowser. |

I think for a word like Mecha, it depends. If it's their shortened version of a borrow word from English, and it means Mechanical, then it would be ok to translate it as Mechanical. If it's a proper name, or it's localized here as Mecha, then it should stay Mecha. Although, Mecha has practically become a reintroduced English word.
I agree on the Demon stuff. Literal translation isn't always the best option. |
