Could the advanced search feature be updated..?
Could the advanced search feature be updated with the new release types ..?
(let's say we want to find only the Retailer bonus albums?) Thanks |

Seconding. Being able to exclude search options would also be welcome (this really only applies to classifications.)

Does anyone need to do any more searches on the old Release Type field, or can we get rid of that?

I went ahead and got rid of it >_>
You can search on Publisher Type and Distribution Type now. Category will follow later. I suppose we'll need to implement a 3-state checkbox (ignore, include, exclude). (Although currently if you check a classification, the unchecked classifications work like excludes). |

I added Barcode and Release Status to the Advanced Search. Still have to think about the best way to do (ignore, include, exclude) on a per-field basis.

I'm interested in all the Animation soundtracks which can be found in the database. Unfortunately it's not possible to search for albums classified as such. Maybe a classification search feature could be added in the future?

I think these classifications are going to depend on how we decide to filter the site content (so that those who don't want to see anime and other works, won't see them on the site at all.) I'm not sure how that all will work, so it might make sense to put it in the advanced search for now.

You can't actually search in the "advanced search" section for albums released on the years 1978~81.
Any way to fix this please? |

Wow, I can't believe we had that hard-coded instead of keyed to our minimum year. Anyway, I fixed that, and bumped it back to 1977. Soon, it'll be set much further back in time.

I've finally figured out a way to search for both the media and album catalog numbers. This means that the Advanced Search will find CPCA-10166~70 if you enter CPCA-10167, CPCA-10168, or CPCA-10170 into the Catalog Number field.
Note, this works by searching the media catalog numbers. There are some albums where these were not updated by users, and in those cases the search won't find the inner catalog numbers. This only works for advanced search. I may add it for simple search later on, but it will be trickier to accomplish this. |

Something I wish was different about Advanced Search right now: if I want to search for game stuff, and leave out animation, it will exclude game releases that also have animation. Like, for example, the Rurouni Kenshin box set. It has game music, so I think it should come up in a search for game music (I wouldn't want to miss that). I kind of feel like something should only be excluded if all its classifications were meant to be excluded by the search parameters.

In that case, you should include "game" but without excluding "animation".
I could make it such that inclusions take precedence over exclusions, if that's more intuitive to people. |

Huh, that's really weird that I thought it should be the other way now that you said that. Now it makes total sense and I don't even know what I was thinking before. I guess I was thinking that it would include something if I didn't exclude it... but I don't even know why I'd think that.
Thanks, this way makes more sense, and is much more powerful. |

I fixed a bug where if you searched by trackname and some other field like "game", the track title search part got left out. I don't know why nobody reported this one, as it's been in there since track title search was added. (I think)

You can now search by scan caption. This is useful if you want to find all the albums with an "Obi" scan, for example.
Too bad we can't search for albums with no caption that reads "Obi". Also, I think some of the complicated searches should present less problems, as I've changed a few things and fixed some issues that I introduced a long time ago. |

I am happy to see the way that the site has evolved over time. It's great that so
many features brought up in this thread have found their way into use. I remain hopeful for a way to tell search to exclude specific terms in the text fields. For instance, if I wanted to find all of the doujin albums released at last month's Comiket 78, I would make my selections as shown below. However, to further filter my results to non-Touhou related albums, in the "Composer contains" field, I would add the operator "NOT" to exclude the term following. Advanced search is already powerful. With this additional level of specificity, it could become even more useful. Last edited by Arrogance; Sep 10, 2010 at 08:07 AM. |

Yeah, like Nisto said, we support the minus (-) operator to exclude keywords in advanced search. So here's a search for doujin albums without "ZUN" in the composer field:
http://vgmdb.net/search?do=results&id=77031 Note that if you use simple search (i.e. the search on the top left navigation) you can't have only excludes (such as "-soundtrack -original") -- you must have at least one regular keyword. |

I'm so embarrassed. But I'm also thankful! You just made my quest for non-Touhou doujin works much easier. Thanks!

To bring this topic back up: it would be desirable if the advanced search engine had the option of searching for an exact phrase that stands for itself. I was trying to look up the artist "Ko Ishikawa" in the notes. What I got were over 100 pages filled with Mieko and Hanako Ishikawas. Looking for the word "Sho" (as in the instrument) is even more hopeless. Combining them didn't do the work, either.

You could add a space behind the phrase, i.e. " ko ishikawa". That reduces it to two results. Generally speaking though, you're looking for a way to search for something like "\bko ishikawa\b", where \b is a word boundary. Which isn't impossible, but we'll need some kind of input notation.

The Shangri-La O.S.T. 2 page was apparently edited (possibly with the performer specific notes) recently, and since the google way isn't exactly always up to date, it may correct itself within a few weeks or so. But yeah, not the most reliable.

The advanced search should be updated for the following:
"Game contains" should be "Product contains" i think.. since we are now not only game related. |

I fixed game -> product. The other search issue is a lot more tricky, and I'm not sure how we could handle that.

Wow, i wonder why i did not had any problem with this before.. but...
Do you really think it's normal/intended the advanced search fields does not find the all the aliases of the same artist ? EX: If you search for arranger "Vomitron", it will return 0 results ? Because all of the vomitron entries have been credited (in the album edit fields to "Peter Rutcho").. Though the entries have been linked to the alias Vomitron. (i wonder if Akumu did not do an error there) Though it's not the problem, it's just that the advanced search won't find all the albums used by the same artirst if you do not use the exact alias name, which can be problematic if the artist have many aliases. Another example is.. you won't find "CARDINAL GATE Conclusion" if you search for Ryutaro Nakahara or Ryu☆.. You will only find it if you used Seiryuu. Yeah, the artist fields need to match what they are linked as, in order for the search to pick them up. If they don't, they need to be edited.
As for adjusting the search to find aliases too, I don't know. It might lead to some unintended results, like if an artist used "Jun" as an alias, it would return many extra results. |
