Who is this guy?

Is he the sole composer behind Ai Senshi Nicol?

Is known through liner notes to have worked on Devastators (Garuka), Ai Senshi Nicol, and Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. The only one of those games with credits is CVII, and that game's credits are a total disaster so I don't think anyone's identified him yet. I don't think it's either Satoe Terashima (because she's female and パパ = male) or Kenichi Matsubara (because he's credited as Kenichi-kun a couple of times on KICA-1046~7 and Tonma-kun's Papa is credited separately).

I definitely wouldn't assume he was the sole composer of a Konami game in particular without having access to liner notes.

After some cheking around, preeeeetty sure it's Yoshiaki Hatano.

Evidence:
- Konami Ending Collection, on Nicol: was his first FDS game [meaning he likely did others]
- Konami Ending Collection, on Castlevania II: as one of the developers he shouldn't say it, but he actually likes Exciting Billiard's more (now he's into jazz more, maybe since he became and old _man_).
- Exciting Billard (FDS) credits:
Quote:
SOUND CREATOR: HATANO [Yoshiaki Hatano]
MUSIC COMPOSER: FUJIO
- Castlevania II credits, and some identifying:
Quote:
Programmed with the following characteristics:
Invincibility: Akamatsu
Permanance: Iwasa
Philosophy: Togakushi
Masterpiece: Kawanishi
Sensitivity: Hatano [Yoshiaki Hatano]
Excellence: Terashima [Satoe Terashima]
Ambivalence: Kuwahara
Flourish: Higasa
Admiration: Ohyama
Warm-Heart: Matsuoka
Superiority: Murata [Kouji Murata?]
Synchronism: Matsubara [Kenichi Matsubara]
Circumstance: Konami
- Konami Ending Collection, on Devastators/Garuka: laments it was #47 and only those that beat the game get its awesomeness.
- Konami Game Music Collection Vol.0, on Devastators/Garuka: Hata-bou [Yoshiaki Hatano] hopes those that keep going till the end remember the ending song and scene.

This entry probably could be changed to "Tonma-kun _no_ Papa" too (Tonma=dunce, btw).

I don't have any immediate objections to this theory.

I think Atsushi Fujio could confirm it, but the problem is he doesn't reply to me. I only got to ask him about Bayou Billy and after that he stopped replying to me. That's the trouble with a lot of those Konami composers. They're just hard to get a reply out of! I don't really understand the post about Exciting Billiards but if you're implying that Yoshiaki did the music for that one, he didn't. He only did sound design, as Atsushi is credited specifically for music. There is one level where it's just ambiance so I wonder if Yoshiaki did that or Atsushi.

I'm saying there is a good link worth considering between Tonma-kun and Hatano, in three games.

The liner notes say Tonma-kun worked on Exciting Billiard, and Tonma-kun isn't Fujio (he had another nickname, in the same liner notes). Wether he did music or not doesn't really matter.

Note that Konami credits at the time are unrealiable, proven several times. Uncredited collaborators, not crediting people that left the company, etc. So even the staff roll (that I posted...?) says Fujio did the music there is always a chance somebody else helped.

Oh? If he worked on Exciting Billiard, then it's definitely him. I have screenshots of the credits on this page: http://www.vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php?...ame_Credits:_E

I'm wondering if I should add Tonma-kun's Papa to Hatano's aliases, but I want to wait until it's confirmed.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if they got the sound staff wrong, as developers back then seemed to pay the least attention to the sound staff. Not only that, but they were usually sometimes treated the least fairly. I had one composer tell me they had the sound staff work on the game last, and then the developers would blame the composers for the game being released late!
