This CD does in fact exist:

http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/201013853

I was starting to wonder, because I've been looking for years without a single sighting.

The final sale price was 73,000 yen and the auction started at 50,000 yen.

There's another one up right now. Opening bid of 70,000 yen, and it has a bid on it.

I saw that one and my guess is that the sale price of the last listing determined the start price of future listings. I had thought that the first one would not get any bids and would be relisted at a lower starting price, which is a trend I have seen in other albums. Unfortunately, the trend here is going upwards.

Even with the good exchange rate, this would cost about $700 after fees and shipping, assuming one could get it for 70,000.

Edit:

Here's an interesting wikipedia article concerning this game: http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Ginga_D...Galaxy_Odyssey

Since it was Zelda-like, it might have been quite popular in the 80s. Scratch the "might". I think the prices that the arranged album sells for solidify the popularity.

I purchased the CD from Ebay just now and will update with scans and more info as soon as I receive it. So far it looks like this CD isn't "original soundtrack" but more a mix of arranges (track 1 and 10 performed by Galaxy Odyssey Orchestra) and vocals (track 2,3,5,6,8).

There's an artist breakdown here http://rps7575.kt.fc2.com/victor/GingaDensho.htm
and a picture of the booklet is validating it from what I can see:

Congratulations. It's incredible that this CD is finally getting "discovered". We're like archaeologists here. If you can calculate the release date solely by looking at the scratches on the jewel case, then I'll call you a pro.

The CD arrived today. I just uploaded scans, unfortunately the obi is missing.

At first I was shocked about the CD quality, there was a loud buzzing noise everywhere. It seems this is an issue of the CD player though. It will take some time to find a CD player which can play this CD fine :-/ I'm glad it's not a manufacturing defect.

If all else fails, I'll sell this CD on YJA and use the money buy the vinyl and a vinyl player :-)

Assuming the album you bought on eBay is this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JAPAN-CD-Gam...AAAOSwg3FUoTWs

It's pretty incredible that you picked this up for $20, given recent sales at 70,000+ yen on YJA.

I had a difficult time ripping the audio from this CD. I suspect the disc actually contains intentional errors, in order to make copying more difficult.

In the end, after using dBpoweramp with the "Defective by Design" option turned on, I was able to extract the audio with no audible artifacts whatsoever.

I've been asked for a rip of this album on 3 separate occasions. By contrast, I've never been asked for a rip of any other album, despite having a pretty big collection (1000+ albums).

I wonder why that is. Is there some huge place to get lossless rips of VGM, which has every album except for this one?

Funny, I just noticed this. Back in the past, when I was hunting down albums like a maniac, it wasn't always because I wanted the physical disc. In many cases, I wondered why there were no rips anywhere, and that made me wonder if the CD even existed. Famicle Parodic 2 was the most notable example, and this was another. Albums like FP2 and Chachamaru are examples of where I was literally forced to acquire the CDs because I had no other option. If I could have found a rip of FP2, then I could have saved a lot of time. But then, I wouldn't have this fantastic set of memories of the thousands of times I searched YJA. Lol.

Oh! Fantastic news. I love that Hally's doing reprints of historically hard-to-find/expensive old albums like this.
