One of the ones that stands out to me is White Lightning from Final Fantasy Type-0 and Lower Norfair from Super Metroid. The accompaniment in White Lightning, the first time I heard it, instantly conjured up images of Super Metroid.

Every time i hear Mysterious Budo's Theme from Muscle Bomber i keep thinking of Ozzy Osbourne's "You Can't Kill Rock And Roll". It's not an obvious similarity, but i just can't help but hear it when i listen to it.

This is a bit of an odd one, but it stuck out to me immediately.

Historia Crux - Final Fantasy XIII-2

I was listening through some game music and came across this song from Mario and Luigi that i swear to god almost sounds like it's going to be the Harry Potter theme at times.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga Music - Teehee Valley

Edvard Grieg - In the Hall of the Mountain King (or as I know it, the theme tune for the Alton Towers adverts)

SaGa Frontier II - Interludium

No.
That's not a similarity, at all. A rising scalular pattern does not a similarity make. Especially when it's a different mode and different rhythm after a few notes.

Yeah, this wouldn't have made me think of it if i had heard it without the comparsion being pointed out. The key is far too different and the overall feeling is way different. It may trigger it a little bit but not enough to make me feel like it's similar, at least not to the point that i'd point it out. It doesn't even evoke the same mood or feeling.

The first time I heard Interludium (which was a few weeks ago), it reminded me of a faster and slightly different and therefore slightly similar version of the classical tune. That's all. Nothing striking.

These are quite close, apart from the rhythm.

For the above comparison, I think that there are other VG-tunes much more fit for paralleling: for example, Web Spider's theme, or this portion of Silent Prison. But I guess I don't see the point in comparison, there, really, since the part I assume you're referring to is a fairly common min/Major chromaticism. Sorry if this comes off as aggressive.

Kingdom Hearts - End of the World
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Skytown

Play these at the same time for maximum fun.

Those examples have only that chromatic phrase in common with the theme, and that's extremely common. I've heard it all over the place in classical pieces that predate Bond by a long time.

No, the FF example is related to the melody, and they have a good deal in common. This is going to get a bit technical, so bear with me.

Both pieces are in the key of G minor. (G A B-flat C D E-flat F G)

The James Bond melody starts on D (the fifth) and ends on E-natural (the sharpened 6th). The important features are the prominent flatted fifth (D-flat) at the beginning, the minor-to-major B-flat to B natural in the middle, and the use of the sharpened 6th degree at the end (going down).

The Final Fantasy battle theme starts on D and ends on E-natural. It retains the emphasis on the flatted fifth and the sharpened 6th (going up), but removes the minor-to-major switch. What's more, it retains these features at the same relative point in the melody.

Like I said, the most important distinguishing feature is the rhythm. The James Bond theme has "swing", while the FF theme is played straight.

Was listening to some random megamix albums from the 80s, and got to a part that somehow felt familiar without having listened to it before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxU1h...eature=related at 6:08.
Well, isn't that familiar?. Honestly, I didn't expect it. The S.S.T. Band sure were a bit of a fan of 80s western music.

I've always thought that the After Burner II theme and Corneria sounded alike.

I know of lots more, but it would take too long to type. If anybody is interested, I can though. ; )

You also have to remember that the FFVII soundtrack was done on a pretty tight schedule, considering. 1 year for four hours of music. That's why some of it isn't up to par, and other bits of it are a little on the derivative side.

I gotta look into it more but The Final Destination OST track 'The Raceway' is practically identical to a tune in Ninja Gaiden 2 (360).

Take Five is obvious. However the Blue Rondo is extremely tenuous, and not something I would call "blatant" at all. The time signature's not even the same, and that's the most prominent feature of Brubeck's piece. Might Uematsu have been inspired by it? Sure. But it's no homage or even an attempt to reimagine.

Thought that the similarities between Final Fantasy 2's "Rebel Army Theme" & G Gundam's "Shourisha-tachi no Banka" were amusing enough for a bump.

Here are a few music similarities I remember out of my head:

TMNT: Tournament Fighters - Karai's Theme
Bahamut Lagoon - Boss Battle

Terranigma - Call at a Port
Darker Than Black - Water Forest

Suikoden II - The desire to triumph
Bahamut Lagoon - Rebel Army These ones just sound similar in one passage.

These are some I can recall by now.

Kid Icarus: Uprising - Mysterious Invaders - Yuzo Koshiro

Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 - 4th Movement

That's just blatant, and so was yours, TerraEpon. I'm not sure about the ones Lavis posted, though. They don't sound that similar to me.

Honestly if I had to guess I'd say the Kid Icarus was a delibarate homage.

So all video game music is plagiarized? Thanks you bastards... now I can't enjoy video game music anymore.

It makes me wonder how many compositions are around that no one has exposed. I consider the whole "inspiration" and "homage" words being thrown around to be bull.

Unless the composer actually states somewhere (they don't) that they remixed the song, then I consider it plagiarism. As with all plagiarists, they just hope they don't get caught.

What happened to Kenji Yamamoto was the right thing. I don't even like composers taking only a few remixed songs here and there out of their portfolio and not referencing the source.

I'm not sure if the composer(s) of God Hand states that all the music is remixed, but if not, then regardless of how notorious the Hawaii Five-O theme is (or other music) and having the license to use it, I still consider it no better than plagiarism if there's no source mentioned anywhere.

The only other notorious one that I know of is Rock Howard's theme being a rip of that Children song.

In short, remixes are okay if they clearly state somewhere (album would probably be best), but they don't.
