I've been waiting for this music to be released ever since I got into VGM over a decade ago. The fact that we got the original Mega Drive music for both games would have been enough to satisfy me, but we're also treated to over an hour of previously unreleased demo tracks that Masato originally produced for Sega prior to them being converted to Mega Drive data. Really digging the demo versions. Disc 2 is essentially a synthy arranged album, love it. It's cool to hear what direction Masato was originally going in with the music and how he initially intended the music to sound before it ever touched the YM2612 sound chip. Seems like if he did the Sonic 2 soundtrack today on modern consoles, it would be mostly jazz. These tracks will take some getting used to though, as I'm so familiar with the originals.

After listening to my copy several times, both at home and in the car, I must say that this is like hitting the Sonic 1&2 music jackpot!

Also, did anyone notice the CD-TEXT data on the discs? It varies slightly from the tracklist printed in the booklet. Main difference is casing and it uses a single dash instead of the double tildes. Not major, just thought I'd mention it. I rarely see that with VGM releases.

(the above was a copy/paste/edit of my relevant posts from other threads)

It is very interesting hearing the original Demo Compositions.

For older games, that is such a nice reference, if only to see just how much of the sound got altered to fit the console's sound chip.

Huh. Kinda neat to know Sweet Sweet Sweet spawned from the Sonic 2 ending and not the other way around

Isn't that debatable? According to the liner notes, he was in London recording with DCT at the same time as composing Sonic 2. Seems like it could have been either way.

I was just reading the interview in the booklet. I don't see why they'd print it if it weren't true. But I guess it happens sometimes.

I just provided bigger ones, with some news scans like the discs or the "case interior".

It's not really a slipcase, but more a cardboard wrapped around 3 trays. It does have a sticker on the front - I could scan it if you'd like.

it would be appreciate Nisto; I've seen some sites like playasia shown that sticker on preview. Others (cdjapan for example) don't. Do all copies come with?

Not sure. I ordered my copy from CD Japan and mine had one. Anyway, I've scanned it.

Yeah same, but problem is due to the nature of the sealing it's kinda difficult to preserve the sticker so I ended up throwing it away.

Why people try to think this album is gonna be rare so soon? Pretty sure CDJapan will restock this soon, even their site says that album ships in 3-7 days, which what I can remember, means that they don't have the album on their storage and they need to restock it. Or something like this.

And I still need to listen to this album and see if it's worth the gaming world like hype.

To be fair, I never said I was excited to get it before it was "rare", I was just amused that when I ordered it they only had 1 left in stock. Pretty much the only place I found that had any left ready to ship.

And the eBay scalpers are already there man. They're charging as much as $60 plus $12 shipping so if anyone is convinced it'll be rare and worth money it's those greedy bastards.

I've seen sellers on ebay selling the Sonic 20th Anniversary albums for quite a lot too on ebay. $60.00 to $70.00, normally. It'snot just this one. They're not rare at all.

I can't get the track titles from FreeDB when I try to rip from GoldWave. Has no one seriously added this to the database?

The two most common reasons for a track not being found when querying vgmdb.net are either incorrect track times on the album in the database (typos, input from mp3s or other digital media) or the existence of a data track on the cd (vgmdb can't query these properly).

Edit the tracklist according to the times listed in EAC in the "Length" colum, rounding any hundredths of a second from .00 to .49 down to .00 and from .50 to .99 up to 1.00. So 1:19:72 = 1:20 and 2:35:11 = 2:35. This is about as accurate as you can get with vgmdb.net since the track times do not support hundredths of a second and the freedb query does not query by discid.

For anybody who noticed the mess at the editing history of the track lengths, I was trying to replace all double-space waves (~) by a mono-space one, but something mysterious happened and then I manually reverted my edits based on google caches. I've even not listened to this soundtrack so can't guarantee the current lengths are correct.

It does query discid. In the album edit page "media" section, there is a field to enter the discid. If this is filled in, the freedb query will match the disc regardless of the track times.

Just for the lulz and to tease some people here, but why is this album still so widely available? Wasn't it supposed to be "limited" and to go quickly out-of-print?? :P

That's because those are by Yukifumi Makino, not Masa. The Staff Roll medley isn't here either because Hiroshi Kubota arranged it.

Actually, the Staff Roll medleys from both games are included. They aren't featured on disc 2, though, most likely because of the reason you mentioned.

Also, the_miker already mentioned what you did.

We know from various research that Yukifumi Makino (Macky) wrote the Drowning and Chaos Emerald jingles, not sure about the other one though.
