I've been hearing that this album has been postponed.

Amazon.de lists 31th August as release date.

Amazon.de once again updated the product page. The new release date is September 21.

I might sound like a broken record here, but Amazon again changed the release date. There's a discussion over at FSM, but they also don't have a clue about what's going on. I'm removing all release date info for now, since I don't think any of these dates were official after all.

Hmm, wonder what could be trouble they are having that's causing to delay the release date again and again.
I mean the album is already completed, all it take is slapping the master files on the disc and pressing the 'mass production' button. |

Well, feel free to drop Sumthing Else or even Wintory himself a mail to get to the bottom of things. I suspect it to be rights issues delaying the release, but that's a wild guess of course.

Got an email reply from Austin Wintory today, he says:

NAK @ the pending edit of the release date.

Is the date for real? I didn't see anything on Sumthing's site.

No, and as I said before, we better wait before it's really out before jumping to conclusions. I mean, as MiLO investigated, even Wintory himself doesn't know when it's out.
EDIT: Amazon.de product page, now it's 19th of October. I'm beginning to believe they've got a RNG running there... Last edited by LiquidAcid; Sep 29, 2012 at 04:15 AM. |

Amazon likes to use placeholder dates whenever one hasn't been determined. I remember all the fuss when they had a date (which turned out to be incorrect) for Guild Wars 2 long before a date was announced.
BTW, what is NAK? |

|

NAK is the opposite of ACK, which is an abbreviation of "acknowledged" (depending on context it can also be used as substitute for "understood"). Guess these days people only remember what LOL and ROFL means?

I'm old enough that I should know that, but I guess I never encountered it.
Anyway, I've removed the release date. |

According to Sumthing Else Music Works' Facebook page, this has been officially released. Amazon US seems to have gone instantly out of stock on it.

Yes, it seems like it was finally officially released the 09th of October.

A quote from an email sent to everyone who's signed up at Wintory's website:

CD is also available at official website: http://store.thatgamecompany.com/en/...pre-order.html I already ordered mine through Amazon US yesterday even though it's still listed as "Temporarily out of stock". Last edited by MiLO; Oct 10, 2012 at 01:17 PM. |

The reason might have something to do with that "limited" there in his email. Though it kinda pokes holes when sellers in the marketplace on Amazon US have it.

Can anyone confirm that some copies of this album were released with a lossy master ? Or is this just rumors ?

I can confirm that copies sold by Amazon were lossy masters. Got a CD from them myself.
Those who understand the spectrals ran some tests and that's what it looks like (track1 as a sample): Spoiler:
It is yet to be confirmed that singed copies sold from thatgamecomapany's website are true lossless. |

^ this image has an absolute frequency cut off at 18.5 kHz, which would suggest the source was mp3 (variable encoding V2 setting) and if the spectral wasn't stretched to 0.150 seconds view, some compression artifacts would be more noticable in the 16 - 18 kHz range, so yup, looks like a lossy source.

It's the same release regardless of where you order it. Mine arrived yesterday (smells travel faster than thatgamecompany ships anything, it seems) and it still had the top adhesive strip (well, part of it) on the case. Same catalog number, etc.

I wonder where this rumor about two different types of release came from anyway. Didn't make any sense to me in the first place.

The rumor originated from soundtrack sharing private trackers, or at least that's where I saw it. It's illegal hush hush stuff, so I'm not gonna go into details.
Nevertheless, the fact stands still. There is no difference in signed or unsigned copies (Amazon) of CDs. Both are lossy sourced. Here are spectral comparison pics of track 1 Nanscence.flac, provided by the owners of Amazon's and Thatgamecompany's CDs: pic1 = Track 1. Nanscence.flac (Thatgamecompany) Spoiler:

It looks much better than I've thought... It's true that any sound above ~18.5 kHz is forever gone XD, but there are no classical compression artifacts in 16-18 kHz range so those frequencies aren't lost (maybe not lost at all [from the mentioned range of course]).
Here's what I mean - it's not comparable track in terms of genre, plus it's very loud but typical compression artifacts can be seen, it's those little 'bricks'. Spoiler:
Journey has a nice continuous line at the frequency cutoff and those artifacts are nowhere to be seen (although it would MUCH harder to see them if the source was high bitrate AAC/AAC+ codec). So it's not so bad really (except the cutoff)... Last edited by Efendija; Dec 4, 2012 at 06:26 PM. |

I'm guessing that's the issue some are having with it. I don't know how the CD sound compares to say the iTunes release of the album or even the one that is sold in the Playstation Network store but if either of them have sound above that frequency then it makes little sense as to why Sumthing Else would use a separate set of source files to press their discs from. |

It's been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media category.

Austin Wintory recently announced that he had some more stock of signed Journey CDs. I ordered one and it has an alternate cover with "GRAMMY NOMINATED - FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION - BEST SCORE SOUNDTRACK FOR VISUAL MEDIA" printed on a yellow banner in the bottom right corner of the booklet. Also, the back has the barcode removed. These alternate prints were apparently given to voting members of the Grammy Awards and he had some left over. Since these were sold to several people during that time frame, I think it's good to have the variations documented. I've added images of the booklet cover and back and labeled them as "alternate". The booklet front is autographed on my copy.
Edit: Austin just confirmed on Twitter that this is a "special non-commercial printing". Last edited by Chris Porter; Dec 31, 2019 at 03:06 PM. |
