Default Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword composer discussion (all Hama tracks confirmed!)

I spoke with Hama via Soundcloud, and he confirmed every single one of his contributions! The good news for me is that all of my guesses were correct. The bad news is I didn't guess nearly enough! Many tracks which I had attributed to Fujii, Yokota, and Wakai were actually Hama's. He did roughly 49ish tracks (give or take a couple because of multiple versions of the same track).

Originally I was under the impression Hama only worked on cutscenes along with Yokota--that turned out to be false. Most of Hama's tracks are cutscenes, but some are BGM.

His versatility is also on full display here. I had previously only attributed the really sophisticated orchestral cutscene stuff to him, as well as some miscellanous electro-piano tunes. I was right about those, but it turns out he did a lot of the non-live orchestral stuff as well. In addition, a bunch of random area themes from the Knight's Academy to the Sand Sea. Totally unexpected, but it makes perfect sense when you listen to his contributions side-by-side.

The biggest bombshell was that he actually arranged the main theme--the one in the trailer. Though we know Wakai came up with the original arrangement, Hama orchestrated/arranged it further for live performance. Bombshell #2 is that he was responsible for the Groose and Fi themes.

Here is a complete list of Hama's work, using the track numbers and titles from the "Expanded" Skyward Sword rip:

104 Theme of Skyward Sword - Ballad of the Goddess (arranged/orchestrated)
107 Link's Nightmare - Premonition
109 Knight's Academy
112 Ballad of the Goddess ~Zelda Solo~
113 Zelda's Theme*
114 Groose's Theme
115 Groose's Insolence
116 Groose's Daze
118 Zelda's Theme (Light Version)*
121 Leaping from the Clouds*
125 Zelda's Theme ~Romance~*
126 The Wing Ceremony Ritual*
127 Tension
128 Link's Nightmare - Voice of Fi
129 Gaepora's Lament
130 Chasing Fi*
131 Fi's Theme
133 Call of Destiny - Fi's Theme*
134 Before the Journey*

204 Link's Nightmare - Illusion of the Imprisoned
213 Skyview Temple
222 The Spring Crest Activates*
223 Dance of the Goddess
228 Tubert's Theme - Theme of the Mogmas
229 Thrill Digger
239 Ballad of the Goddess (Short Version)
240 Memories of Zelda*

304 A Sudden Crashlanding*
305 The Enchanted Earth Below - Groose's Theme*
306 Grooseland - Groose's Daze
323 Shark Attack
336 Fun Fun Island
337 Skydiving

412 Lanayru Sand Sea
413 Ancient Lanayru
436 Lady of the Sealed Grounds*

502 Opening the Gate of Time
503 Groose's Change of Heart
509 Pumpkin Harvest
513 Bamboo Island
514 Bamboo Slicing
529 The Temple Appears
534 The Isle of the Goddess

602 The Hordes of Darkness
612 Triumph over Darkness
613 Link's Return
614 Conclusion - Fi's Theme
616 Eternal Gratitude - Fi's Theme
617 Impa's Farewell

*These were the ones I knew were his based on style. You can hear a clear similarity among them.

Here is a google doc that I put together several months ago detailing my process and guesses. I updated all the Hama tracks, but haven't gone through to do other revisions yet.

Post #2:
Please use the google doc for reference. I'd love to continue discussing the composer credits. Currently, my biggest concern is that I've attributed too many tracks to Wakai and too few to Fujii.

In an interview with Fujii, she gives the impression she did a large amount of music, including but not limited to dungeons and battle themes. I point this out because as of now I only have a single battle theme attributed to her.

Your thoughts are welcome!

Great work, but I'm still confused as to his role at Nintendo. Was he simply a contract guy for that one year (2011)?

It was two years (April 1, 2010, to February 29, 2012), but yeah, contract employee.

Ooh, very nice! Thank you for your detective work.

The only problem I am having is my rip is not the same, so the titles don't match up, and I'm having to employ a bit of lateral thinking to figure out what's what.

(perhaps a PM is in order )

Thanks again Joe, I was able to tag my rip! Always a good feeling

Hello ! I allowed myself to post in this quite old thread because we have some more official confirmations with the release of the Breath of the Wild OST (and also the 30th anniversary orchestra concert). I think we also can guess some other Shiho Fujii tracks with the help of the Super Mario Odyssey OST for example.

If I have time tomorrow, I may do an elaborate post about that.

PS : it's my first time posting on vgmdb (I'm happy to join a community of game music lovers !) and I'm not a native english speaker so I hope my english is correct !

Almost a year later, I'm finally doing what I said in the last post !

To begin with, a little reminder of what we officially know :
- Wakai composed Ballad of the Goddess
- Fujii composed Skyloft
- Kondo composed the opening cutscene music
- the Staff Roll theme (a medley of an original tune, the Ballad of the Goddess, the Overworld Theme from The Legend of Zelda and Skyloft) has been composed by Yokota, Kondo, Wakai and Fujii (source : https://vgmdb.net/album/63737 ). If we attribute each theme in that medley with each composer, that means Yokota has composed the original tune heard at the beggining and at the end, so I think Yokota being in charge of that medley is almost confirmed.
- Fi's Theme has been composed by Hama (already confirmed in Jormungand's post, but here we have the confirmation by Nintendo themselves : https://vgmdb.net/album/75832 )
- Wakai did "Place of Dragons" (most likely this one : https://youtu.be/mE_xRFQ2us8 aka "The Sacred Dragons" in the expanded rip), same source as Fi's Theme
- Yokota did the "Goddess Sword Level Up" orchestral jingle (still the same source)

Now, time for some guesses :
- with the Mario Odyssey composer breakdown, I'm like 99.99% sure Fujii did Batreaux's Theme, just compare it to "Encounter with Cappy" and "Bonneton" : https://youtu.be/my8m9y1cvlk https://youtu.be/hG-iUJ_dNec https://youtu.be/NQwBl1oirOs
- with the same argumentation as above, the I think the small jingle "The Dragon's Head" is Fujii's work.
- to me, Crimson Loftwing sounds more like Fujii than Yokota (it sounds a lot like Skyloft)
- I think that "Fire Sanctuary" is more likely Fujii's work than Wakai's. And I'm not sure that some other tracks attributed to Wakai by Jormungand are his work but rather Fujii's (for example, Faron Woods could very well fit both composers style)
- to me, Yokota definitly did orchestration and/or some arrangement to all the orchestral themes Jormungand attributed to Wakai (all orchestral bosses themes + the Stalfos middle-boss theme + "Exploring the Skies") + the opening cutscene theme composed by Kondo

That's all I gathered for now, I may go deeper into this soudtrack later but I would be really interested to know what you think about my guesses !

Eh, I had Faron Woods marked as Wakai?? Yeah I don't remember doing that haha. It's much more like Fujii's style.

Agreed. This was the main reason Yokota was brought onboard. And they ended up needing so much more music than anticipated, they got Hama to help out too.
