Talking Average print size?

OK, starting off my first post here with a question.

Any guesses to the avg. number of copies of an OST is printed? With big names like Final Fantasy XII it "sold 31,000 copies as of January 2010." Guess my limited edition copy isn't so limited.

But what about the smaller franchises? Persona, Street Fighter, Ace Combat?

The market for VGM is pretty small, so does 5000-8000 sound good for the not as popular stuff? Just curious.

I think it's less than 1k. Selling game soundtracks isn't really a good business.

Persona is actually one of the strongest franchise as far as the sales is concerned, as both P3 and P4 OST have sold 70,000 to 80,000 copies. Given around 200,000 is the sales figure for both games, it's just unbelievable. Final Fantasy also used to leave the impressive sales history, and XIII sold 10,000 more than XII. I don't recall the exact number, but VII and VIII sold 200k or 300k. Don't know much about Street Fighter. Ace Combat, if my memory serves right, was around 2k.

Yes, Cedille's numbers are correct. The majority of game soundtracks have 1,000 (and under) as their total print run.
70-80% of the total number of releases ARE the "not as popular stuff".

The charts such as Oricon. They are generally reliable (at least, don't spread speculated numbers as the fact, like VGChartz, the biggest crap ever born on Internet).

And statements from producers working at the labels themselves.

The producer for Scitron Digital Contents, Takahiro "T.J!" Yagi, had told me that the average for albums from Scitron was around 4~5k. For an average, that would mean some would do more, but some would do less. (That conversation was back around 2002).

Of course, the year of release matters a lot in this context. An album from 1987 would have sold more copies than an album from 2007.
