60949-7: Walt Disney's Dumbo Classic Soundtrack Series
Disney's Music Trivia:
• Edward Plumb served as orchestrator while Ken Darby and Charles Henderson provided the vocal arrangements for the score • Oliver Wallace's first feature animation scoring for Walt Disney. Before that, he contributed music to numerous of shorts from the late 1930s and beyond • Frank Churchill and Ned Washington's second feature animation scording for Walt Disney. Frank Churchill wrote music and songs Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, and Ned Washington worked with Leigh Harline on Pinocchio one year earlier • The Sportsmen (later known as The Sportsmen Quartet), The King's Men (another male quartet featuring Ken Darby, who provided the vocal arrangements for the score), Cliff Edwards (who contributed his voice and vocals to Walt Disney's Pinocchio a year earlier) along with the Hall Johnson Choir contributed vocal performances to the score. However, the only one who gets credit in the soundtrack's booklet is "Baby Mine" performer Betty Noyes • Second feature animation from Walt Disney to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score after Pinocchio • The sixtyfour-minute film is composed of some eighty individual musical sequences • Features a reference to Effie Canning's 1887 song "Rock-a-Bye Baby" on the track "Storck on a Cloud" • The general lack of songs sung by onscreen characters compared to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Pinocchio is complemented by the fact that the protagonist never speaks • "Dumbo Serenade" serves as Dumbo's leitmotif and is used prominently throughout the score, expressing his innocence and joy in "Bathtime / Hide and Seek", but also his sadness in "Dumbo's Sadness". This method of leitmotif scoring has already been used in the past, and will continue in future Disney animated features as well • One of the most experimental and complex segments of the soundtrack (and film itself) is the "Pink Elephants on Parade" sequence. Oliver Wallace wrote it as a theme and variations with exotic Middle Eastern, waltz and Latin variations, while adding Ned Washington's eccentric lyrics • Several other songs were written for Dumbo but were unused. "It's Spring Again" (Churchill/Washington) was replaced by "Look Out for Mister Stork", however parts of the lyrics were used for the opening narration and "It's Circus Day Again" (Churchill/Washington), where only Churchill's melody is used for the circus parade; "Sing a Song of Cheese", which would have been sung by Timothy Mouse, was written by Churchill with lyrics by story writers Joe Grant ad Dick Huemer. It was cut as it did not serve the narrative of the picture. "The Pink Elephant Polka" was penned by the same team, but the track was replaced by Oliver Wallace's "Pink Elephants on Parade". Churchill's melody for "Spread Your Wings" was written in June 1940 and is used in the finale of the score, minus the written lyrics by Ned Washington Last edited by Mac_Tear; Apr 1, 2021 at 04:53 AM. |
