In the credits for the arcade version of Contra, it says that the sound was done by Kazuki Jah (Kazuki Muraoka). Since the songs are essential the same on the NES version of Contra, does that mean that Muraoka was the actual composer of the music for Contra, and that Hidenori Maezawa only arranged it for the NES version?

From the 1up interview he did, I would say that yes, Kazuki Muraoka is the original composer of Contra, and Hidenori Maezawa ported it for NES.

1UP: The credits list we found for you isn't entirely accurate...these guys got some of this right, but not all of it. We have you down for Contra, Top Gun, Life Force, The Adventures of Bayou Billy, Super C....Can you go into detail about some of the specific games you worked on?

HM: Gradius and Contra I worked on completely alone.

1UP: Those were the home versions of the arcade games, right?

HM: Sort of. For Gradius, I ported the music from the arcade version, but it also had original songs on Famicom.

1UP: Did Contra have any original songs?

HM: To be honest, I don't remember!
