I took a look in the GOG catalog, and it looks like quite a few of their releases include a digital soundtrack as one of the bonus items. This list includes some pretty old games. Does anyone know how they are doing this?

You're right, GOG currently has about 140 soundtracks in their repertoire as bonus items, which makes it quite a treasure trove for old scores that never got a release before. I was planning to add their Might and Magic and Alone in the Dark soundtracks over the next few days...

The album presentation really differs from title to title with GOG: some of the album are properly tagged and have been encoded with iTunes, while other albums don't have track titles (only 'Track 1', 'Track 2' etc.) and come as 128kb mp3 encodes. I assume at least a number of their soundtracks are simply a dumb of the music files found in the game's installation folder. But at least, all of GOG's soundtracks I've seen so far have the composer info.

All this being said, given that GOG's releases are all legitimate and legal, I guess the same goes for their soundtrack releases.

Hope this info helps a bit.

That's not true, i personally own the soundtrack "Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - The Director's Cut", and there's abslotely no info about the artists, neither the composers nor the vocalists.

Also, i even wonder who decided about the tracklist order because files were not numbered, and it's not even in the tags either. Here's exactly what you get:

As mentioned, all the GOG albums I've personally seen so far - about 15 - have the composer info in the tags. But obviously, that's not always the case.

As for the order of tracks, from memory most GOG soundtracks I know simply order their tracks alphabetically via track name, sometimes - as you point out Myrkul - without track numbers. As for the origin of the track names, my more or less educated guess is that these are often simply the file names of the tracks, as stored in the game's file directory once installed.

I took the liberty of modifying the tracks order, according to GOG tags.
