獄 can refer to "hell", as in 地獄 (jigoku). E.g. 獄炎 = hellfire. So 獄幻界 as "Phantasmic Hell" isn't too far off.

Is someone able to translate the booklet's liner notes from each composer, so that maybe a little more album information could be revelead?

Late but...

After some general comments, Kimura says Furukawa and Egawa helped and wrote some new tracks.
Then he talks about some tracks.
09 - Egawa
14 - Furukawa sequence (sp?), Kimura strings and percussion
01, 07, 08, 16, 17, 35, 36, 39 - doesn't specify who, but since he gave credit to Furukawa and Egawa before I think these are all Kimura's (39 at least is).

The rest are just other staff's comments.

After listening to some of Furukawa's work from Konami his role as well as Egawa's is still very mysterious on this project... anyone has ideas?

Loving the old atmospheric synth on these tracks. Very King's Field-esque in parts. Is it as blood pumping as Castelvania III or Rondo? No. But neither was Super Castlevania and I feel this soundtrack is cut from the same cloth. Tower of Sorcery should be held up as a classic Castlevania tune, but sadly it seems most people dismiss this album not because of the music but because of the game. I'd honestly put this well above Yamane's PS2 efforts.

I've always enjoyed this disc, and the arrangements at the end are just some sweet icing.

They could have used less dark shading on the front cover. I get what they wanted to do but it's like most of the cover is... covered... it doesn't do the poor game much justice

Yeah I feel like they could have pulled the concept off better if they had made original art to fill the cross entirely rather than laying it over the existing art like that. Or better yet have it be a black outer sleeve with the cross cut out

They really thought it was so great, they made the same thing on the front, back and even on the disc, haha. And the tray is embarrassing.

At least we get 3 mugshots. The 2nd one is Masahiko Kimura, I guess, but what about the 1st and 3rd guy? Don't tell me the 1st one is Motoaki Furukawa??

It's messages from three of the staff members with their names at the end of each message and an accompanying picture. First one is Tomoya Tomita, the sound producer. Second one is indeed Masahiko Kimura. Third one is Takeo Yakushiji, one of the planners/writers for the game.

I was recently able to transcribe the liner notes for this album:

* A night in peace and quiet

Thank you so much for transcribing the liners notes of an mostly overlooked soundtrack!

As Dag pointed out already some years ago, "Rose" was composed by Mariko Egawa (but probably arranged by Kimura due to his trademark style), and "Underground Tunnel" was done by Motoaki Furukawa (basic sequence) and Masahiko Kimura (Strings and Percussion).
This explains why it is arranged by Furukawa at the end of the soundtrack.

I don't think the two other composers did much beside this, as most of the soundtrack belongs to Kimura-san. As Producer Tomoya Tomita stated they "helped out with BGM" and those two tracks were probably the ones they were responsible for.

Maybe "Magic Tower" was composed by Mrs. Egawa, too as it sounds different from the rest. And "Maze Garden" may be Egawa or Furukawa, as it also sticks out a little bit (plus Kimura composed a new theme for Legacy of Darkness, maybe his own this time?)

No problem. I too have a soft spot for this soundtrack. I've always believed it to be underrated from the start. Sure, it's considerably different in style from the rest of the Castlevania soundtracks but that doesn't mean it's worse or inferior. On the contrary. It does what it does quite effectively. It also helps that it actually sounds fantastic for an N64 soundtrack. Aside from Rare, the folks at Konami were truly able to make it sing... which was something that a lot of games made for it didn't always succeed in doing. Even Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, could have stood to be better in the soundboard department, although both were still excellent soundtracks overall. But Konami found effective ways to work around the system's limitations. The violin solo at the beginning is a highlight, as is "Castle Keep", and the suitably ominous sounding "Annex". There's a lot of very nice stuff in this soundtrack.

I had hoped that someone would go through the trouble of translating the notes into English, but if it's too daunting a task, then I understand.

What does he mean whe he says that he couldn't record all the songs on CD?

So, track 39 was supposed to be in the game? Is it in the game (sorry guys, haven't played the game in a long time)?

* A night in peace and quiet

So were track 37 to 39 supposed to be in the game or are they just remixes added as bonus on the CD? If he says he didn't have enough space on a single CD, why would he then waste it on tracks that don't appear in the game. I'm confused. Morever, he mentions lack of space on the CD, and then mentions lack of space on the game (I supposed he mans on the cartridge).

So is the soundtrack CD missing pieces of songs?

What they're saying is they weren't able to put all the music in the game on the CD (some cutscene music is missing as per the 村人 liner notes) but included some arrangements to make up for it. You don't have to take such comments at face value, though.

The liner notes on 地下坑道 mean that Kimura would have liked to sample a live guitar performance by Furukawa for the in-game version but cartridge space constraints didn't allow him to do so. The piano and violin in the opening are the only sampled live performances as far as I remember.

Track 37 is an arrangement of track 16/36 and 34.
Track 38 is an arrangement of track 14.
Track 39 is an arrangement of track 33.

It's not that there's much exciting stuff missing from this soundtrack anyway. From what I can recall, it's mostly some moody cutscene music, which isn't that interesting and works mostly within the game. Too bad, they didn't include the "Bloody Tears" arrangement (when meeting Dracula at the Castle Wall) or the confrontation with Death at Clock Tower's roof). That one stuck in my head quite some time.

Therefore, I'm glad they added some bonus arrangements, which have more value than the filler material from the game I guess (not for completionist tho lol)

Hey, good catch! I never made that connection.

Here's a list of the music missing from the CD:

Code:
opening (short version)
stage 1: skeletons rise from their grave (0:30)
some alternate intros to "Shudder"
stage 2: castle gate closes in the beginning (0:20)
stage 2: Dracula appears
stage 3: entering the courtyard in the beginning (0:30)
stage 3: last Cerberus battle BGM (0:45)
stage 3: vampire appears (0:15)
stage 3: meeting Charlie Vincent (0:50)
stage 3: meeting Renon
stage 3: meeting Malus (0:30)
stage 3: victim rises (jingle)
stage 3: coffin opens (jingle)
stage 4a: finding Arachne (0:40)
stage 4b: lizardmen attack (0:20)
stage 5: blood jelly appears (0:40)
stage 5: breaking the seal (0:15)
stage 5: finding the crystal (0:15)
stage 5: killing Sypha (part 1) (0:20)
stage 5: killing Sypha (part 2) (0:20)
stage 5: after defeating Rosa (1:10)
stage 8: Death cutscene (2:00)
stage 8: Actrise cutscene (1:20)
stage 8: killing Death (0:40)
stage 8: killing Actrise (0:40)
stage 10: Renon cutscene (part 1) (0:40)
stage 10: Renon cutscene (part 2, jingle)
stage 10: Charlie Vincent cutscene (0:30)
stage 10: Castle Keep cutscene (part 1) (0:20)
stage 10: Castle Keep cutscene (part 2, this reminds me of Symphony of the Night's "Door of Holy Spirits") (1:00)
stage 10: killing Dracula (0:50)
stage 10: horse cutscene (0:20)
stage 10: Dracula cutscene (before) (2:20)
stage 10: Dracula cutscene (after, part 1) (0:30)
stage 10: Dracula cutscene (after, part 2) (1:00)
stage 10: final battle cutscene (before) (0:50)
stage 10: final battle cutscene (after) (1:00)
game over screen (1:00)
some small jingles and unused tracks
There's roughly 20 minutes of music missing although there's quite a bit of overlap between pieces, so in reality it might be closer to 10 or 15 minutes.

I'll echo Mac_Tear's thoughts on the stage 2 and stage 8 music being the greatest loss. There's some more good stuff in there but nothing as good as the aforementioned, at least to me.

i'm sort of buying an original ost for the game music, even if it's not exciting music. they can put remixes and arrangements somewhere else.

thanks for the list of missing stuff. crazy!

"they weren't able" then can't be a problem of space, since they had space for 10 minutes of arrangements. too bad this is another butchered game ost, like so many.

I gave some wrong information earlier. The game actually sampled some more live performances (e.g. when the skeletons rise from their grave). But unlike the opening which was recorded by the game's staff, it's all from some stock sound CD of orchestral performances. I've heard bits of it in other works from the late 90s and early 2000s.

I wouldn't call this album butchered though, just truncated maybe. Most of the good stuff is there. And the two campaigns with their unique cutscene music make it very hard to put in an order without ruining the drama when you listen to the CD from start to finish.

Is this rendition of "Dwelling of Doom" unique to the promo tape, or does it come from somewhere older?

It's from the 1991 arrangement CD Perfect Selection Dracula.
