This is the entry for the collective group of SNK's composers. Like the Konami Kukeiha Club, they were often just credited as a whole instead of individually. The artist page currently has six different aliases (seven counting the name it's currently assigned) spread across 97 albums, so I have no bloody idea how many of these are "correct."
So I investigated. First off, a look at some of the names I've seen around:
Here are all the English names I've found through album scans: SNK Sound Team PCCB-00046, PCCB-00062, PCCB-00076, PCCB-00132 SHINSEKAIGAKKYOKUZATSUGIDAN PCCB-00174, PCCB-00223 Aaaaaaand, that's it. Everything else is either in Japanese or not present in the scans we've got. Regarding some of the names starting with "SNK," just about every album had "SNK 新世界楽曲雑技団" on the spine, but "新世界楽曲雑技団" on the front, back, booklet, etc., so I'd say leave the "SNK" off. There's no reason for most of these aliases to exist. I see two ways to go:
I would go with the first, since that's actually what's appeared on the albums. The question there is whether to use "Shinsekai" or "Shin Sekai." I'd go with "Shin Sekai" because it's not referring to the place (I don't think), but "Shinsekai" is definitely more commonly found. I don't have a problem with translation, and I'd favor "Neo Geo" over "New World" as a reference to the console, although that's written as "ネオジオ" instead of "新世界." I wanted some feedback instead of just going ahead and changing it, since it's a pretty big change. |

I'm glad you brought this up, because I was recently pondering over this same issue, particularly the fact that we have so many different names for this group, most of which aren't real.
While I love the Neo Geo play on words, and have used it at times, the most accurate thing is to stick with the straight romanization - Shin Sekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan, aside from the SNK Sound Team for the early albums. One thing I'm curious about though. Is there ever any distinction between the composition team, and the group that performs the arranged albums? (kind of like Kukeiha Club vs Konami Kukeiha Club) |

Given that 新 is a common prefix and 新世界 is a relatively common compound, I'd go for "Shinsekai" myself.

Finished normalizing everything. Went with Blah's suggestion of "Shinsekai" because I'd take his word over mine any day. Some specific notes:
Turns out there were only three credits to "SNK Sound Team," not four. The fourth said "SNK Sound Team" but then gave full arrangement and performance credits. KOF Maximum Impact 2 Soundtrack gives "SNK Playmore" as a composer, so that's another legitimate alias. NEO GEO DJ Station in Gemudora night ! doesn't have any composition or arrangement credits in the scans, as far as I can tell, but the back cover does give "SNK新世界楽曲雑技団" for two things I can't read, as well as a qualifier for the member Konny. Since it's the only album I saw that actually had "SNK新世界楽曲雑技団" in the credits instead of "新世界楽曲雑技団" for anything, I went with "SNK Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan" as an alias. |

So for the longest time I always thought they were "Neo Sound Orchestra." Can anyone explain why I thought that?

Jun Kajiwara has been also one of the best members of the Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan for years, please add him to members.

Has Jun Kajiwara ever actually composed for an SNK game or, in general, any game at all? He's arranged and performed for a bunch of SNK albums, this is true, but he's always listed separately from the Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan in all the credits, like in this scan, where arrangement is credited to 新世界楽曲雑技団 and Kajiwara separately. Kajiwara is a frequent collaborator, but I've seen no evidence that he's an actual member.

I've been collection info from the SNK's staff rolls, that should give us some light about who-did-what. I didn't add them directly to each album because, well, the list is super long, and a bit because the albums explicitly credit Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan. So maybe other people in the sound team worked in each OST, it may be a bit disinformative to credit just the composers.
Games marked with a (*) mean I didn't see the credits myself, just used Mobygames/arcade history/jp sites/etc (may have mistakes and lose the CAPS). Other games I wrote as they were (vgmuseum, youtube/nico or myself). Many staff rolls are ALL IN CAPS, though in the few games that also use lowercase some composers favor CAPS. Here is what I have so far, I might edit it later (warning: monsterpost ahead) SNK Credits:
Of course the list may contain mistakes. Years are likely to be off since I didn't check throughly. Seems to me the Shinsekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan didn't exist until ~1991 and was over in late 2000 when SNK died, and some composers were rehired later or contracted per game basis. Now some stats from the above (years they were part of SGZ): Spoiler:
Aaand that's all. Last edited by Dag; Sep 6, 2022 at 02:21 PM. |

Wow. You are a hero.
This is Kikuko Hataya. You probably knew that already, because jesus, but you just left her real name off the list. |

In regards to the MS (1/2/X/3) gang: MobyGames claims that "SNK was so impressed with Nazca's Metal Slug that they acquired the company" which I certainly do not doubt. Make what you want out of that, I'm pretty sure HIYA! at least is freelance, though; have not seen that interview so maybe someone who has knows what to make of it?

Cool, great find. But it's surprising she joined GE-ON-DAN, I thought she'd retired. I wonder if they'll will add more ex-SNK members.
I added some info about Kitapy possibly being Yoshihiko Kitamura here. Quote:

Sorry, I don't get what you mean. If you are not talking about SGZ why post it in this thread? Or did you simply mean that some NGCD games do credit arrangers?

Another ex-SNK dudester joined GE-ON-DAN: Yasuhiro Naka (中康洋). His profile unfortunately doesn't list any aliases (yet), but it does list quite a few specific games, so let's take a look at the staffs of those games, taken from Dag's I must say again excellent list:

Assuming you're correct with Yassun (I agree with you on that one), MIWA and SHA-V are the only aliases in the last two lines for Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition not featured in the earlier six. My money's on SHA-V for 2 reasons:
1. The V in The Last Blade 2 is a big tip off 2. It's the one with an S, a letter that's pretty rare among these names. As for Samurai Showdown: Warriors' Rage, the two are ASSHY and BERO-OU. I'm going with ASSHY for this one because: YASSUN (Two Ss in name) YASUHIRO ---->YASSUHIRO (Assumes Yassun is Yasuhiro; has H in name) -->YASSH (subtract UN; replace with H) Therefore, YASSH----->ASSHY by simply moving the Y at the start to the end |

Excellent, another one down. Actually, the last game should be SS64 2/Asura Zanmaden (there are two games called Warriors Rage in the west...) so:
Samurai Spirits 2 Asura Zanmaden / Samurai Shodown Warriors Rage - SOUND DIRECTION: Mitsuo-1000, YAMA(BOMB)PY-1 - SOUND COMPOSE AND SOUND EFFECT: IMO♪, Jojouha Kitapy, Yassun, Asshy Plus I didn't check Wild Ambition myself (just used mobygames or such, marked with a *) so they may be incomplete, time to hit Niconico for the credits... Let's hope GE-ON-DAN keeps adding more SNK people (I'm pretty curious about Kitapy myself) Nah, SHA-V's name was confirmed already, and Yassun and Asshy did work together. It has to be Yassun. |

Ok more fun speculation (please ignore my last failure)
- SHA-V's site links to the sites of Yamapy's, Toshikazu Tanaka's and to a man called Hideyuki Ashizawa (芦沢 英志). He says he worked for around 2 years in SNK. So looking at the surname and the dates, he's possibly Asshy. - Hori_Hori (Metal Slug 3) says in the MS Complete Box liner notes he's working at SNK (pachislot Metal Slug) but using a different name. There is zero info around but just for the name and obscurity he could be Yoshiaki Hori. |

Kyoko Naka has a small Twitter list of (ex-)SGZ members: http://twitter.com/kyochan_piano/snk-sound. There are four people on it right now: SHA-V, YAMAPY, Hideyuki Ashizawa, and then some unknown guy, Akihiro Uchida. He doesn't have a bio or homepage link, so I have no idea who he is or what he may have worked on. I'll go out on a limb and suggest Ackey as a possibility.

"Asshy" Ashizawa and "Ackey" Akihiro...
No doubt; they fit too well not to be. I'm not too golden about Hori, though, but that's just me. I think we can at least make some pages for the former two artists. Yasuhiro Naka as well. |

Akihiro Uchida's mini bio says his work is related to music. He also mentions meeting Imo (Hirotomi Imoto), "Mari-san" (Mariko?) and Ao (?), who worked with Ackey. Good bet on him.
Also, I finally found the Wild Ambition credits and Yassun is there, if there was still any doubts on him being Yasuhiro Naka. Random tidbits probably nobody cares for: - SHA-V is read "しゃぶ/shabu" (stimulant/drug). Comes from "麻薬中毒/drug addiction", since 麻-中-=Asanaka. He's been working in mobile and pachislot. - In Tanaka's old blog (not around anymore unfortunately) he said (IIRC) back then all sound teams had their own name (Alph Lyra, KKC...) so they choose one too. The runner up was "Neo Sound Orchestra" (I guess that's why at least one album uses it), Tanaka proposed "Ethanol" (uh). - Also on another of Tanaka's posts, back then it was popular to use "surname first kanji + py" for PN: Kitapy and Yamapy-1 (Yamapy-2 was originally Tate Norio, but he changed it). - This person says SNKP replied him there is no KOF12 OST because no publisher is interested. orz - Kyoko Naka is teaching piano. - Yamapy has worked on quite a bunch of things after SNK and is in a band, see his site. - Brother Hige did the SNK intro voices ("violent fighting to come again...") and similar samples included in certain tracks. - SHA-V talks in his blog about the making of these tracks: ESAKA?, Dear Falling Angel, ESAKA FOREVER, Tears, Good-Bye ESAKA (his technique is to make a good intro to draw the listener in). - In a SS4 liner notes SHA-V says he worked on 'flame' characters like Billy Kane, Kyo and Kazuki. - Also in his blog, he comments Kazuki from SS4 and Rhythmic Hallucination originated from the same rejected song (so I understand he did both). - In her site, Kyo-chan says she did: Kaze no Allegory (Yagami song); in Last Blade 2 composed (except bonus track) and was in charge of all. Also helped in (piano parts, orchestration, etc): Mirthless (KOF97 ending), Mai's song, Last Blade 1/2 - This (mirror) old SNK blog about KOF2000 development, I think identifies KONNY as the leader. - NEO GEO Logo = YAMAPY (from Yassun) - Coments from The Rhythm of Fighters (each is composer + arranger) Toshikazu Tanaka: Raiden the Brave [Yuusha Raiden] HIYA! (Takushi Hiyamuta): Living on the Deck sha-v: "ESAKA?" zoe: Control Crisis (recheck later) Spoiler:
From Kyo-chan's site: Spoiler:

Is there any info about SHA-V and Tate_Norio absences in KOF XIII OST? |

The SNK brigade keeps rolling into GeOnDan, although this update is not quite as exciting as the others have been. First up, there's Yasumasa Yamada: http://s1.shard.jp/geondan/yamadub.html. We know all about him already. Seems like most of his recent game works have just been SFX.
The other, potentially more interesting one, is Tomoko Imoto (née Kobayashi): http://s1.shard.jp/geondan/tomokoimoto.html. I had no idea she used to work for SNK (I am nothing even remotely close to an SNK expert, though), but it makes sense, since she apparently married Hirotomi Imoto. The one SNK game listed is "ネオジオポケット 頂上決戦 SNK VS. CAPCOM," which I think is supposed to be SNK vs. Capcom for the NGPC (頂上決戦 最強ファイターズ SNK VS. CAPCOM). Here are the sound credits for that game: Quote:
