There used to be a 23 song tracklist up, but the album itself has 33 tracks.

The added tracks at the end are 8-bit retro versions!!

So the publisher must have decided to add those in at the last minute after their initial tracklist info was already given out to shops.

There are some 4-kanji idioms in the tracklist, making it difficult, but I got a couple of readings from here; definitions are there too, but sometimes beyond my ability to comprehend.

I translated the rest. 竜驤虎躍 I left literally as "Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger" since the imagery it evokes should be pretty self-explanatory.

Thanks. I think that site might come in handy if it has enough of those idioms defined.

This soundtrack is pretty good too.

Tracks 23-33 appear to be from Hototogisu (1988) for the NES, developed by Tamtex and published by Irem. As it turns out, Irem is the developer of this PSP game, Hototogisu Ran (2008).

However, I don't see any NES listings on Suemura's personal site at http://www.aqualoft.com/kennosuke/main/index.html. I would assume that means he's not the composer (nor is Kobayashi), and that the original composer of the NES soundtrack has gone uncredited.

So... anyone here into collecting rare Famicom cartridges?

Well, I was planning to do this sooner or later, so now's as good a time as any. Similar to my Breath of Fire III composer breakdown thread, I'd like to add my assumptions about this soundtrack's individual composition credits. Unlike my BoF3 discussion, I have no confirmations (aside from the Famicom portion). However--again, unlike BoF3--the styles of Saori Kobayashi and Kennosuke Suemura are like night and day. It's to the point where I can basically guarantee readers that my list below is 99.9% accurate. Kobayashi's tracks are just that obvious. In fact, the same is true for the Hoshigamui Remix soundtrack (which I'll also post a composer breakdown for). As with BoF3, feel free to add to the discussion.

----------------------------------------

HOTOTOGISU RAN ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

(KS) / Kennosuke Suemura
(SK) / Saori Kobayashi
(IM) / Ikuko Mimori

NB: Suemura's name is printed on the front cover of the OST (as if he is the sole composer) while Kobayashi's is only printed in the inside cover. Yet, according to my breakdown, she composed more tracks than Suemura. However, Suemura is also listed as the arranger. I have a theory that Kobayashi sent her work to Suemura in MIDI form, which Suemura then arranged for the PSP hardware. He also is the arranger of track 1, which is a reprise of Ikuko Mimori's "Opening" from Hototogisu (1988). I believe that this scenario is also a possibility for the music in Hoshigami Remix, but that discussion is for a different thread.

1) Fujiki's Theme (IM + KS) CONFIRMED
An arrangement of track 23 "Opening", composed by Ikuko Mimori in 1988 for Hototogisu (Famicom).

2) Party by the Meandering Stream (Lobby) (SK)

3) Cherry Blossom Brilliance (Municipal -Spring-) (SK)

4) Festival Music (Municipal -Summer-) (SK)

5) Moonlit Autumn Night (Municipal -Autumn-) (SK)

6) Water Drops Falling from the Frost Covered Trees (Municipal -Winter-) (SK)

7) Time of Fighting (Departure for the Front) (KS)
This one is less a composition than it is a compilation of taiko, tam tam, and some kind of Chinese flute (bangdi?). I'm of the opinion that Suemura was behind any usage of sampled instruments/loops in this soundtrack.

8) On the Brink of Battle (Battle Screen Even Match) (SK)

9) Giving Wings to a Tiger (Battle Screen Advantage) (SK)
Panzer Dragoon, anyone?

10) Critical Situation (Battle Screen Disadvantage) (SK)

11) The Commander's Picture Scroll (Briefing) (SK)

12) Flag of Daybreak (Briefing) (SK)

13) Warlord Rivalry (Simulation Screen 1) (SK)

14) With Heroic Drive and Boundless Energy (Simulation Screen 2) (KS)

15) The Hero Sometimes Takes Advantage to Gain Ground (Simulation Screen 3) (KS)

16) A Hero Rises With the Times (Simulation Screen 4) (KS)

17) Dancing to Our Demise (Before the Final Decisive Battle) (KS + SK)
Previously this was marked as Saori's work. I now believe it to be a track composed/arranged by Suemura, but at 0:54 he seems to take material from the second half of track 6 (composed by Kobayashi).

18) Flying Dragon, Leaping Tiger (Final Decisive Battle) (SK)

19) Cheer (Battle Victory) (?)
Too short to make a reasonable evaluation.

20) Funeral (Battle Defeat) (?)
Too short to make a reasonable evaluation.

21) Endless Cycle of Reincarnation (Game Over) (KS)

22) Wings - Mai Iida (Ending Theme Tune) (Mai Iida, arr. Hiroshi Ebihara, Daikoku Azuma) CONFIRMED
As stated in the liner notes.

23-25 & 26-33 (IM) CONFIRMED

27 ?

Ikuko Mimori noted on her website that she composed all BGM for Hototogisu except the "siege" (籠城戦を除く全BGM作曲). Presumably this is referring to track 27 on this album.

The game has no other explicit sound credits, so I don't know who the other composer is. Perhaps Shuri/Shuly Kakinuma, who is only credited with "title design" but does have a few sound credits in other Irem games.

I've updated my post based on CHz's reply.

Also, I have rethought track 17. I'm pretty sure Suemura is the arranger and partial composer. He seems to have taken material from the second half of track 6 (composed by Kobayashi).

I think that sengoku efuda yuugi is a pretitle (there is subtitle, so why not pretitle ;p)
because the booklet interior left page only uses hototogisu ran without sengoku efuda yuugi (it's not as if kanjis couldn't be added before)
