Default Japan's gaming output

Japan is moving on to cellphone games from what I've read. Handhelds are selling and consoles are not. This year has been pretty sparse on the vgm front. It's funny that Japan has always gone all-out on the music front, but now is reducing itself to wimpy cellphone speakers of disposable f2p games.

How is the arcade situation? I am under the impression that the scene is still strong and soundtracks from those games will keep coming as usual. We have seen a big player in vgm, Cave, close up shop rather than succumb to totally selling out its franchises to mobile phones.

Then we have the situation where big Japanese developers (3rd party ones like Capcom) are westernizing their games to stay competitive along with their music.

What do you think of the videogame situation right now? There seems to be a lot of freelancing with Masafumi Takada and Akira Yamaoka up for grabs. What do you think will be the situation 5 years from now with it and accompanying game soundtracks?

There will never be a lack of VGM, only one of "official" soundtrack releases. The bad part about the increase of digital only releases is the amount of DRM involved, that combined with the lack of physical releases makes it hard to preserve the output.

Is DRM really a problem for vgm or general music releases? iTunes is DRM free now.

From what I know Japan is holding it down for cd releases in the world (resist the mp3). Won't mp3/digital only releases hurt vgm sales? If they do then wouldn't that cause more companies to become like Nintendo and have the music as an experience inseparable from the game?

I was thinking of DRM as in the DRM used to protect the systems and their games. While that's nice and dandy for sales it's horrible for video game preservation, especially with plenty of the DLC disappearing for good without any physical media to hold on. And the music included in those go with them, with only a very small part getting official releases.

Is there a transition to the pc front for Japanese developers?

Not really. More and more Japanese publishers see PC/Steam as a viable audience outside of Japan and mostly let Western developers port their games for cheap (to varying quality). In Japan itself PC is still far worse off for gaming than during the proprietary 1980/90's heydays. Steam releases are either overpriced or outright blocked there.
