I'm also biased because on the Falcom side, the music of the first four Ys games (along with Sorcerian and, to a lesser extent, the first two Legend of Heroes games) define what I consider "classic game music". The redbook for Ys III and the Perfect Collections for 1, 2 and 4 are mostly the definitive versions for me, yet I still enjoy variations such as Ys Book 1 and 2 redbook (I quite like this version, but I consider it somewhat overrated), Ys III Perfect Collection (minimal effort, but I'm happy with the final sounding product...also bias because it was my first Perfect Collection album), Ys III Super Arrange (solid album, some of the best individual versions of several Ys III tracks) and Ys III/IV JDK Special (solid companion pieces to the better albums of both). These newer versions just join stuff like Midi Collections, Ys 1 and 2 Renewal, Ys I and II Eternal and Ys Provincialism (yeah I went there) as ones that don't quite cut it. Ironically, I rarely listen to the original "Music From" versions of Sorcerian/Ys I-III because most of their arrangements are so faithful to the originals.

Ah, Falcom, how I love you and your arrangement overkill ways!

I don't really know what the story is with this Ys 8 business, but this whole project just sounds like one huge, disorganized mess.

I think it's cool you admit to the bias. Not to insult him, but I've been detecting massive bias from Despatche because the two soundtracks he thinks are the disgraces to VGM both happen to be Falcom soundtrack remakes... But yeah, Provincialism Ys is a CD I own that I really don't know why other than I like to own CDs physically and enlarge my rather small collection with slightly more exotic things than just Final Fantasy and Suikoden. That CD is... well, hold on, let me not add something to the list of things I "have to remind people" that I dislike

The one track I originally bought it for (Last Moment of the Dark), I have on Very Best of Ys. I still like that version (possibly the best overall version of that song...the beat fits the song so damn well, as do the US Ys Book I and II samples), I just didn't like the rest of the album anywhere near as much and sold it awhile ago. It's an album people should hear just to hear what a trainwreck of arrangements would sound like. At the very least, it was more tolerable than the arranges on Final Fantasy Mix.

But yes, I can attest to wanting to simply expand my album collection at times. You just have to take the bad with the good.

Guys, I'm going to split this thread and move the somewhat off topic discussion out of this subforum, leaving the posts that focus on the album. It won't be a clean split, unfortunately

Edit: The other thread has been created. If you feel a post should be moved back here just make the continuity edits (if necessary) and message me.

Listening the soundtrack on iTunes with headphones and dear god it's amazing. And some of the remixed tunes are not that bad either!

The Falcom Rule applies once again.

Where are the booklet scans from? They're pretty clearly upscales...

Other than the disc images (which I uploaded yesterday), everything else came from user doppel9014 ... not sure if those are his own scans or if they came from elsewhere.

But they look pretty good to me.

I've only now started to listen to this full OST. My initial impressions are that, for the most part, the "remade" audio is a missed opportunity. On the other hand, the new/original compositions are really enjoyable.

Will have more detailed impressions after I've listened more. But on a quick glance, I don't think this tops Felghana for me.

PS - Provincialism Ys is awesome.

Removed the hyphens away from the album title, as scans doesn't have them.

So, there are missing tracks in this album?

Ah dude. Karna, Sanctuary of the Sun, and Theme of Adol 1993 are my favourite tracks of Ys IV. And they're not here... sigh, Falcom incompetence.

My biggest issue with this soundtrack is that the overall sound quality is pretty varying between the synthesized tracks (i.e the Ys IV arrangements, done by the Sound Team jdk) and the new tracks with acoustic instruments (all composed by the Sound Team jdk, but arranged by Jindo & co.), and as a result it's all an inconsistent mess. Say what you will about Ys Seven, but at least the soundtrack was consistent.

I actually really like *most* of the arranged tracks from Ys IV, as they remind me to the J.D.K. Special(s) versions. I just wish they either arranged the entire Ys IV soundtrack or gave us a completely brand new, original soundtrack, instead of a(n) (inconsistent) mix between old and now.

Well, that and the lack of town music. The game itself also feels rushed.
