Default Rip / Redbook category? What is it exactly for?

I see that there are no releases in this category yet.

Maybe it sounds stupid, but what is it for exactly? CD-based games with CD-DA Tracks?

We included this category a long time ago, when we thought we might be hosting music, including game rips. This isn't true anymore, but the slot is still there. You'll notice though, that you can't select 'Rip / Redbook' when you submit or edit an album, and there aren't any in the database.

This category wil probably be abandoned. What I'd like to replace it with is "Bootleg", so that we can catalogue some of the major bootlegs, strictly for the purpose of warning the public. This is controversial though, and will require more thought.

@ Secret Squirrel: You can use it for well-known rips like "Golden Sun Anthology", can't you?

Since this is not my project or anything..

I'll just give my point of view on the subject of rip/redbook on VGMdb:

I don't think it's a good idea, and i personnaly would love to not see it.
Well known or not .. a rip is a rip, period.
I love and use VGMdb for its "officiality". There is already enough work anyway with official releases to be bothered with millions of game rips.

Yep, right, but why is existing a rip? Right again, because there is no OST out.

I see a rip as an emergency solution (well, in the majority of cases) and for that it has a right to be listed at VGMdb.

But I agree with you, Myrkul, I don't want that VGMdb will be flooded by rips for that's no use, too.

I think that rips would belong in a different database, one which concentrates on cataloging music from games, not game music that was released/published in some fashion. Such a database would be built around the "Game" as the central unit, instead of the "album."

It's possible we might work on something like that in the future, but I think that there are some other groups who are doing just that, and for the moment, we've got a full plate here as is.
