Default VGM Vocals

What vgm albums have good vocals on them in your opinion?

The only vocals that comes to mind are the Katamari ones. Just about everything else makes me cringe.

edit: will individually list interesting vocal vgm songs later.

I was deeply impressed by the vocals on track 8-10 on PCCB-00207 and track 15 on PCCB-00225. Though they are arrange albums and I'm not sure if you count those in too.

I feel vocal is something the entire VGM scene is gradually dominated by, but it's a good trend, at least compared to featuring sloppy licensed J-pop in the OP and ED. I'm fond of most of the recently well-selling and well-acclaimed albums such as later Persona, Nier, Ar tonelico or TWEWY (although the last one seemingly gets a mixed reception in Western), but I especially like Meguro (and Masaru Shiina's occasional weird vocal tracks).

I think that at the bottom end is Lost Odyssey's "What You Are". I can't think of a worse combination of dull melody, insipid lyrics, and phoned-in performance than that. Final Fantasy XIII's "Kimi ga iru kara" comes pretty close, though.

As for the top end, I think that Mitsuda's songs have been pretty consistently well done, especially the ending for Chrono Cross. Truly a case in which less is more. As Cedille mentioned, Meguro's work on Persona is good, even if it doesn't always align with my personal tastes.

(As a side note, "vocal song" is redundant.)
