I wonder if Yayoi Wachi should be added to the list of composers? She didn't actively work on the game, but a couple of her themes from Zwei appear in Azel in arranged form.

Also... conjectural composer breakdown incoming.

Based on what I have learned about Kobayashi's tendencies, techniques, and general style, I am very confident about the accuracy of this breakdown. Those tracks marked Kobayashi are undoubtedly her work, as her style, particularly her highly-ornamented melodies and stepwise chord progressions, is very distinct. Please consider studying the soundtracks of Shadowgate 64, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Hoshigami Remix, and Hototogisu Ran and you will discover this for yourself. I would be happy to go into more detail for any track; please ask if you'd like clarification.

Reference:

-"main theme" refers to the melody in the main body of "Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu" performed by Eri Itoh
-when the main theme is referenced "briefly", this usually means the first 4 notes of the melody (triplet > half note tied to whole note; fifth > tonic > fifth > fifth). This shortened figure shows up in a variety of instruments, most notably in a sampled female voice. Its appearance is often quite subtle.
-"chorale section of the ending theme" refers to the first part of "Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu" sung by female chorus (Eri Itoh multitracked)
-For those tracks labeled as confirmed, please see this thread.

PANZER DRAGOON SAGA ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

(SK) / Saori Kobayashi
(MN) / Mariko Nanba
(YW) / Yayoi Wachi

DISC ONE

1) Ecce Valde Generous Ale (MN) CONFIRMED (arranged by Hayato Matsuo)

2) First Battle (SK) CONFIRMED

3) Noble Rebel Army (SK) CONFIRMED

4) A Holy Nation of Deceit (SK) CONFIRMED
References Rebel Army theme.

5) Solitary Battle (SK) CONFIRMED
References main theme, aka Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu.

6) Wings (SK) CONFIRMED
References main theme.

7) Separated for Eternity (SK) CONFIRMED

8) Premonition of War (SK) CONFIRMED
References main theme.

9) Metamorphosis 1 (SK)

10) The Chaos Within the Silence (SK) CONFIRMED
References main theme very briefly.

11) Metamorphosis 2 (SK)

12) Giant Creature 1 (SK)

13) Rest (MN) CONFIRMED

14) Breath of Life (SK) CONFIRMED

15) The Blue Ruins (SK) CONFIRMED
References main theme very briefly.

16) Wandering (SK) CONFIRMED

17) Forbidden Land (SK) CONFIRMED

18) Pure Blood Seed (SK)
References main theme very briefly.

19) The Black Fleet (SK)
References Rebel Army theme. Please note that in the breakdown provided in the linked thread in the references section, "The Black Fleet" is credited to Nanba. However, this could only be accurate if Nanba were the arranger. Kobayashi is most assuredly the author of the Rebel Army Theme. Thus, its presense in this track requires Kobayashi be credited at least as composer. It is still possible that the track was arranged by Nanba, which would account for why she was credited on JASRAC.

20) Rendezvous with Destiny (SK)

21) Atolm Dragon (SK) CONFIRMED

22) Spirit of the Dragon (SK)

23) Forseen Encounter (SK)

24) The Empire (SK + YW)
References Yayoi Wachi's Empire theme from Panzer Dragoon Zwei.

25) Boxship (SK)
References main theme.

26) Zoah (SK)

27) Paet (?)
I originally had this marked as Kobayashi's work, but after repeated listens I'm unsure. In has attributes that could be considered the work of both composers. I'm leaning slightly more toward Nanba, but I'm really not sure. I'd like some help on this one.

28) Water Ruins (MN)

29) Ancient Weapon (MN)

DISC TWO

1) Trapped Underground (SK)
References the chorale section of the ending theme.

2) Path to the Being (MN)
References the opening theme.

3) Sealed Spirit (SK)
References the chorale section of the ending theme.

4) Elevator Chase (SK)
References the main theme.

5) Giant Creature 2 (SK)

6) Separation (SK)
References main theme very briefly. Kobayashi's signature "distress" harmonic style is all over this one, orchestration and all.

7) Source of the Protective Flame (SK)
Uses the Zoah melody. Of all the compositions on this album, this one might capture Kobayashi's melodic and harmonic style in its purest form. In other words, if such a thing is possible, this is the most Kobayashian composition Kobayashi has ever written.

8) Dream (MN)

9) Sleeping Iron Ingot (MN)

10) Imperial Air Force (MN)
I'm positive about this one. When Kobayashi does action music, you'll know it: none of her highly ornamented, elusive melodies are here; and the harmonic style is safe and uncolored. This belongs to Nanba without a doubt.

11) Giant Warship (SK)

12) Fading Away (SK)
References Rebel Army theme. References main theme very briefly.

13) Holy Chariot (SK)

14) A Century Gone By (SK + MN)
References main theme and opening theme. I am unsure if this was co-composed by the two, or one of them arranged the whole thing. Either way, both should be credited for the composition.

15) Interception (MN)
A bit unsure about this one... The only thing that throws me off is this quiet melody that lasts from about 1:10 to 1:30, which sounds like Kobayashi. But everything else, from harmony to arrangement to rhythm, sounds like Nanba.

16) Awakening (SK)

17) Conclusion (SK)
References Rebel Army theme.

18) Village of the Seekers (SK)

19) The Forest's Scream (SK)

20) The Red Ruins (SK)
References main theme very briefly.

21) Into the Promised Land (SK + MN)
References the opening theme AND the main theme. See notes for 2.14; more likely to be a solo track, probably Kobayashi's arrangement. However, both composers should be credited.

22) Overture to the End (SK)

23) Tears (SK)
References the chorale section of the ending theme.

24) Sestren (?)
Too little musica content to make an informed guess.

25) Vision 1 (MN)

26) Vision 2 (MN)

27) The Final Battle -Recurrence- (SK)

28) Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu (SK) (arranged by Hayato Matsuo)

Were you unable to get clarification on Kobayashi's pieces in your interview with her?

From Sonic Retro:

QUOTE (Sestern)
well this is what Saori Kobayashi answered me about Mariko Nanba cooperation.

Saori : Mariko Nanba was my once co-worker.
And she is still my good friend.

In the case of AZEL,
I composed the main theme and she asisited me.
We created AZEL's music parts based on it.

for example:

main theme.......kobayashi
stage 1..........kobayashi
stage 1,2 boss...kobayashi
stage 3..........nanba
stage 4 boss.....nanba

..........like that.

/end

voila, so no specific theme attributed

.....

So whatever "Stage 3" and "Stage 4 Boss" are equate to Nanba.

Furthermore, both variatons of Metamorphosis and Giant Creature are Kobayashi's, as JASRAC showed through MJCA-10009 (http://vgmdb.net/album/1038)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBaG3ADi7aE - Metamorphosis / Mutation 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZDSdJfwxT4 - Metamorphosis / Mutation 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cV5JrrioJ3Y - Giant Creature 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgeSELnLPeA - Giant Creature 2

And yes, The Black Fleet is definitely an arrangement done by Nanba. This isn't the only time Marvelous Entertainment used this crediting system.

Love that 'Sona mi areru ec sancitu'. I always thought it was from Panzer Dragoon Orta since it appeared there. That is what i get for not owning a Saturn.

Anyways they both sound the same to me.

I am surprised SEGA never remade this game for XBLA or whatever. Seems like it would do well and not many have played it.

You're right- too few people have played this. By the time Saga released the Saturn was dead in the West so its three print runs were extremely limited (30,000 total). And pre release neither Team Andromeda nor Sega had any idea they had a classic on their hands. From what I've read the original code for Saga was lost during a restructuring at Sega. Worse, by all accounts it likely no longer exists. Even the unlockabke original Panzer Dragoon in Orta is a port of the PC version. Series director Yukio Futatsugi expressed interest when asked about a modern version for today's consoles, though added he would not be the one to do it- citing the incredibly difficult development process of Saga. The Saturn was cumbersome to develop games for and emulation is still unsuccessful. In other words: it's highly unlikely we'll ever see a rerelease.

If that ever miraculously does happen I'm going to reappear on this thread and post how much better Panzer Dragoon Saga always has been than same era RPG Final Fantasy VII. It'll be worth all the backlash I'll get if 1% of those people actually finds out for themselves. Come at me fanboys!

And that, my friends, will give them a new soundtrack to talk about.

Despite saying "Complete," this still seems to be missing songs. Does anyone know which ones exactly?
