Default Artist association with forum accounts

Not that we're heavily trafficked (yet), but I saw Kevin "Wizwars" Hagge was the most recent signup on the forums, and it made me think about artist association with forum accounts.

OC ReMix uses something similar with its forum accounts linked to specific OC ReMixers, and showing up under the person's forum name in their posts. Here's an example from OCR, where you see "OverClocked ReMixer" under each person's name: http://www.ocremix.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13185.

We should do something like that here. It could encourage more artists to sign up, and would be an easy way to see how much awareness is coming from the VGM community.

This is a pretty cool idea. I think we'd also give any artist by default the ability to edit their own artist page.

Bringing this one back up. I'll follow up sometime with a list of IDs I know.

I guess there are a bunch of things related to artists that need done. I should try my hand at a couple of them since I'll have some time off this month.

I don't know if we'll need to give artists the ability to edit their own page, since public editing is coming soon. We'll still want to create a usergroup for them, and probably spiff up the profile somewhat.

What would be a good title though. "VGM Artist"?

That certainly seems good to me.

I'd prefer to see a designation between Hobby artist and Pro artist though, for those who do remixes for fun on the side, and for those who's main/primary job is vgm work. Although of course it'd be a subjective headache with plenty of gray areas, so it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Yeah, that can generally be deduced from viewing an artist's body of work. We don't need anything like that, since we're looking for a catch-all term.

So, you get to be our first Guinea Pig (although you're a bit of a special case, since you're in two user-classes now.)

Anyway, how do you like it so far? BTW, the title links to your artist page.

Definitely cool, though I'd keep the colors of the titles with the blue/gray-blue style, since the yellow and green clash with the look for the forums, IMO. Gotta bold the advisor titles too. Thanks for implementing this! I'll keep track of any additions as best as I can.

What colors do you suggest? Both of these shades of yellow and green are used for various things on VGMdb, so the clash was kind of intentional. I could tone down the administrator one, but the artist one is definitely one that we want to stand out.

Well, the VGMdb lettering in the logo is a shade of gold, it looks like, so we could try something like that. Other than that, I'd say a light shade of blue that's different from the usual blue we see on the links. The bolding of the titles already does half the work of drawing attention to them.

I'm using that gold shade (or one close to it) for the admin tag now. It's not very prominent because the postbit background is a lighter color than the two alternating forum colors. Now red might be worth a shot, but red usually has negative connotations.

Ah, yeah now that you mention it, I see that's a dark gold. Could just do a light gold. The "VGM" in VGMdb has a comparatively bright shade at the top of the letters. Not trying to overthink the color suggestions, at the end of the day, I'm cool with whatever.

I went into Liontamer's artist profile after seeing the green text and clicking it.

It says "Discuss (2)", but when I click the discuss link, it says there's no thread currently existing and prompts me to create one.

Oops, I never copied the code for that over from albums. It's working now, so thanks for catching it.

I'm featured on this release, can I get one of those cool VGM artist links for my profile too?

That Zinger is you? It looks like you need an artist page first. If you don't mind, could you give us some vital information, like name and date of birth for your page?

Squirrel, you didn't notice last year's thread at SD about him playing in tokyo, with Hally, YMCK, etc at chiptune events?

I guess I just didn't make the connection. Anyway, you're all hooked up. I need to do the same with the other artists that Liontamer listed.

I think I need to get cracking and make an album just so I can get a special link under my name as well. It's a great idea.

it doesn't have to be game music related to be listed on this site either. just make sure you have at least one track on an ocremix project that gets listed here, then all other irrelevant solo albums you've made can be listed as well (apparently!)

Well that really shouldn't be the case. I thought the general rule of thumb was the game-related material had to outnumber the original stuff added. Definitely been noticing way too much j-core, or whatever it's called, being added...

Shnabubula's prolific enough, mostly with individual arrangements. Temp Sound Solutions is prolific enough. zircon's doing a pro game soundtrack.

Actually, hey, try straight up yellow (255, 255, 0). I think it's rocking it more than the green.

Japanese hardcore music (or japanese electronic music in general) has a direct relation to game music, because a huge part of it's history originated from game music itself. Just let western electronic music lovers listen to japanese electronic. They'll most likely say something like: "It sounds like composed with a playstation.", justified.
It's a little bit hard to understand for western gamers, but J-Core has very much weight for the japanese gamer society. Even if an album seems to have no direct relation with game music, you'll often find one while listening close to it. Many passages, samples or tunes come from famous game titles. Now, I could start to go in the depths of J-Core, but it think there are enough ressources for this kind of information.
It's all about information, in my opinion. Having more information is better than having less of it. Pointing towards many audiences is better than just pointing towards one. Adressing the general and worldwide gamer society is the best, in my opinion. But well, everyone got a different view of things. That was just mine.
Blah already talked about a possible extension of VGMdb. For my part, I'd be very happy about such an extension.

I've added a new tool to the bottom of the artist edit page. You (staff) can use this to link a forum profile to an artist by entering a userid into the box and hitting 'submit'. you can also unhook an account by entering 0 as the userid.

I still prefer the green to yellow.
