1. The default tracklist should always be the English one. I've reverted the edit.

2. I've fixed up the English tracklist to make it less objectionable. I don't know about "死して屍拾う者無し" though, but I suspect the current translation is not right.

I think the translation there is a "dynamic" one. i.e. -- the literal phrase is probably a saying that doesn't quite work in English, but is the equivalent to "spilling innocent blood."

From what I can make of it (and granted I'm not Japanese scholar), it translates to something like "killing those who have not seen death" -- or, killing those who have not killed.

Something like that...

But yes, a fluent Japanese speaker to help with that would be appreciated.

of course, this statement is only valid in case you heard ALL WORKS EVER MADE BY MANKIND
otherwise, it's quite silly to affirm such a thing

I meant "game soundtrack" okay

Honestly, it is not much different than to say something between the lines of (popular example) "Final Fantasy *insert Roman number here* has the best soundtrack of ALL time! I mean, ever! In any video game!", and yet no one complains about it . Also, you (probably) wouldn't have complained if I mentioned your favorite game soundtrack instead

Anyway, I would love to see a remake of it one day though, if only for the music (Brandish 2 arrangements were amazing but scarce...). Also Falcom please include the unused Brandish 2 music (and anything else you can find) as well if you ever do so.

for a best soundtrack of ALL time, you should wait for the end of time ;p
knowing me, I'd have surely found a way to complain regardless

(edit: drat LA saw through ;p)

I admit that both Battle Point Version D and Fortress are pretty weak, though - they could benefit from an arrangement, I think.

But everything else is sheer genius. Strangely enough, "Karl Kares" sounds better on the SFC port - like more intense.

There's been a change in the market value of this CD. I've seen several listings below 10,000 yen recently. This is great news for anyone that wants to own this gem, since the normal list price used to be around 27,000 yen.

18 宿無しジョニー shouldn't be "A Journey Without Rest" --Journey is written ジャーニー in jap not ジョニー
it's more like "Homeless Johnny" but it sounds weird
there is a "rebel" meaning for ジョニー tho (as I don't know the game, no idea if it can be accurate)

20 NINJA YASHIKI~死して屍拾う者無し (my personal translation is Strewn with Corpses)

33 Karl, Your Are Shining <-- I guess it's supposed to be You Are, or it's an intended typo?

38 哀愁の戦士たち --literally "Soldiers of Sorrow" if I take the words used for tr38 (so not "Soldier's Sorrow")

36. GADOBADORRER
38. Soldier's Sorrow

Several months later I just noticed I forgot to follow up on what Atsushi Shirakawa (TENMON) composed in this soundtrack (asked through his Twitter):

Atsushi Shirakawa (TENMON):

4. BATTLE POINT Ver.A

15. BATTLE POINT Ver.C

16. CASTLE WALL

18. Homeless Johnny

20. NINJA YASHIKI ~ Spilling Innocent Blood

28. Laboratory

33. Shining Karl

34. BUNDEVIAS

Some of those reports from Tenmon were a surprise to me. But Castle Wall and Ninja Yashiki, as well as Bundevias ... those don't surprise me at all.

Thanks for doing the fact-finding on these!

According to Kaneda on Twitter:

Matsuoka:

Stranger ~ Wandering Swordsman
Ice Zone ~ Green Zone
Wharf 1
Castle Town
Wood
Dark Zone
Castle
Battle Point Ver. D
Fortress
Bundevias (A friend of mine checked the original audio files, and this song's channels are laid out the same way as Matsuoka's other songs, and unlike Shirakawa's. It seems safe to say this really is Matsuoka.)

Ishikawa:

Shop
Synchrony

Tsunashima:

Dela Delon
Islet
Battle Point Ver. B
Tower
Nucleus
Epilogue

Nakajima:

Adonis
Wharf 2
Karl Kares

Shirakawa:

Mystic Dela
Brandish House

Such a shame the tracks on this masterpiece aren't double looped ... I've yet to find a rip with comparable quality.

The whole thing is amazing but the build-up on the last tracks is just INSANE.

Agreed. I consider this and Brandish 3 the greatest works of VGM Falcom ever made. Same dream team behind Ys IV, but I think more effort was put into fully developing these than the FM demos of Ys IV from the JDK Specials. Brandish 3 especially has so much frigging variety and quality to match that I never get sick of listening to the full album. Every piece starts out strong enough to be content, but then continues exploring all these musical foot paths and side streets in a way that's incredibly satisfying.

Brandish 3 is amazing as well yes <3

As to call them Falcom's greatest I don't know, but they do have a very different feel from their more "mainstream" works. I always assumed the overall darker tone Brandish music has originally came from Ishikawa, whose work on Ys 3 was definitely darker than Koshiro's imo. Something that Shirakawa and Kaneda especially then perfected and expanded on.

The closest in atmosphere is imho the unreleased Revival Xanadu 2 soundtrack, which features gems like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ThL0XWcWg0
