Mr. Kikuta will be providing music for the next Shining game for the PSP, Shining Blade.

http://andriasang.com/comynj/

Clearly the developers were pleased with his awesome work for Shining Hearts.

Has he ever done non-awesome work? I seriously love this guy, one of my favorites of all time. Haven't heard everything he's done, but what I have heard, I've always liked.

As of yesterday, he has been retroactively transferred from VGM heaven to VGM hell for composition work he did 14 years ago. At least things are run efficiently over there.

Bah, I still like Seiken Densetsu 2 & 3, and Koudelka is also pretty darn decent.

For me it goes something like SoM > SD3 > Soukaigi > everything else he's done.

I think Shining Hearts is still too new for me to decide where I'd rank it among the rest of his work. But to me Shining Hearts stands out above everything else he did during his dormant years (eroge, crappy Enix MMO that no one's heard of)

It seems Hiroki Kikuta also worked on Shining Hearts: Shiawase no Pan, an anime series.

Kikuta so obviously did the music for Blade Arcus: (unless it's reused from Shining Blade, haven't listened thoroughly to that yet; a similar trick was pulled for the anime)

Given he clearly holds favor with the developers, maybe they'll see fit to one day make a traditional RPG that will actually get released in the West.

Just beautiful.

I believe Kikuta has stated he owns the rights to this music. I hope someday he decides to release it!

It seems that the Western edit version of the show (in various languages) uses completely different music than the original Japanese version.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB2BCFjtKe0

Trying to track down composer information for the Western version has proven difficult. Here's a staff roll for a Russian dub of the French version:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHbM...ailpage#t=4950

That credits "Village Production London" for the music, which isn't very helpful. The music credit might also just be for the theme song.

Then there's this, an English dub of the Italian version with Arabic subs (confused yet?). There's a totally different staff roll sequence, but it uses a karaoke version of the Japanese ending theme. Two names are credited for the music: T.M. Wilson & W. A. Nabb. "Village Production London" is credited for "Musical Edition", a role I have never heard of nor have any insight into its purpose.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2UD...ailpage#t=1328

So basically the foreign edits of this show are completely messed up. The original Japanese (and Italian?) BGM, however, is very clearly the work of Kikuta. But, I don't see his name specifically in the credits. I don't know if the kanji we have on his artist page is for "Hiroki Kikuta" or "Yuuki Kikuta". However, there doesn't seem to be a specific credit for "music composition" either, just the theme song composition. It would be great if someone with greater knowledge of Japanese than I could have a look:

He did a reddit AMA a few months ago: http://www.reddit.com/r/gamemusic/co...or_the_secret/. (I thought it had already been posted here but it seems not.)

It's both! When he took the pen name Hiroki he kept the kanji the same, as it can be read both ways.

http://www.cocoebiz.com/report/kikut...iew2007_en.htm

This is the interview where he mentions his older anime works. I'm a bit confused though since he's officially not credited anywhere on The Adventures of Robin Hood
http://vgmdb.net/album/22862
Perhaps the soundtrack is incomplete and his music wasn't used.

robin hood has 52 episodes with only 14 tracks of music?
it'd be a bit short (not impossible but even so)

it's strange that he is not credited for this one, note that that ost was out the day of 13th episode airing
he maybe did that sort of 2nd season (13 episodes aired after the 1st 39 episodes in 2 weeks)

Did you catch this on Kikuta's twitter feed? Obviously Kikuta has been a Holdsworth fan for quite some time. Seriously, listen to it. It's amazing, brilliant music.

I agree
Lots of game composers seem to love prog and fusion artists. I'm the same... the muso gene or whatever

And all that prog/fusion stuff, especially from the 60s and 70s, is just so fertile. There's no shortage of material to draw from.

Here's a backup link for episode 1 of The Legend of Snow White (Shirayuki Hime no Densetsu). I downloaded it this time to make sure it isn't lost.

Most videos you can find of this are the English dubbed MONDO version, and have the inferior replacement music.

After doing some reflecting, it's a real shame how record publishing companies became so huge over a span of several decades and caused rights/licensing/distribution to become such a convoluted, impenetrable legal mess. There's a lot of great music out there that has been lost forever due to the shady business practices publishers (especially in North America) willingly engaged in.

Mr. Kikuta has re-released a million older albums on Bandcamp:

Tiara (2009) | Bandcamp

Speaker for the Dead (2014) | Bandcamp

Yashagaike (2015) | Bandcamp (Note this is NOT the "+1" version)

Tokyo (2017) | Bandcamp

Pattern Recognition (2017) | Bandcamp

ANIMA (2018) | Bandcamp

Plus a brand new SNES-style album! It might as well be called Secret of Mana 2!
